Halo 3 Spartan Armors?

In the screenshots I've seen on IGN for Halo 3 multiplayer, some show spartan-looking armor that's not quite the same as Master Chief's, i.e. the "glass" on the helmet goes further up and other small but noticeable differences. Anyone know what this is about, and if it's just a multiplayer skin choice?

There are 3 different armor types that you can use, though the difference is only cosmetic, no actual performance change from the normal one.

IIRC, it's because those are Spartan IIIs, compared to a Spartan II like Master Chief.

Spartan IIIs are like K-mart Spartan IIs, but this is assuming I'm remembering my Halo information correctly...

You're kinda correct, but the IIIs are more suited to recon, the suits arent battle suits, theyre stealth suits.

For all intents and purposes, Spartan IIs were the best soldiers ever, in mankind. Master Chief wasn't the best of them, he was just the best mix of skills and luck.

The IIIs were put through a more intense training, but its too fast and somewhat wreckless b/c the human race needs them asap.

Thats what i've gathered from the 4 books...

Links/Pics?

And they've already nailed it. Spartan III's, read Ghosts of Onyx for their full story (and all the halo books, they're pretty quick reads)

I liked Fall of Reach the best, though Ghost of Onyx was interesting as well.

Agreed, the back story was freaking sweet

Thanks for clarifying. I've never read the books; all the information I've gathered was from descriptions my friend who did read the books gave.

Actually, there are 10 different armors you can pick from in Halo 3 for the spartans, and 5 for the elites. Some are references to the books/other Halos, some not.

7 different ones for the Spartans actually. The reason I now know is because I have Halo 3 and I've been playing it for about 5 hours

I can't figure out how to unlock any more than the 4 default options though, and I've beaten the game on Heroic now....maybe it's all opened up by multiplayer achievements, anyone know for sure?

They are unlocked through achievements, some of which are single player only and some of which can be done on either single or multi player modes.
