I hate the melee in Halo 3, it doesn't just have stupid power, there's also a lunge to it. The average lifespan of each player is typically less than a minute when I play. The game heavily favors CQC with a quick 1 second assault rifle burst and a melee to finish. It's turned into more of a brawler than an actual shooter.

I really don't see this "lunge" aspect of the melee that you are talking about (although I'm not saying its not there). I never feel like I lunge with anything other than the Sword. Every other weapon feels like you're just smacking the other guy quickly and if you miss, you're usually dead.

Um, no one wants a one hit and you're dead game. That makes no sense. Your point is stupid.

I usually play no shields in Halo! One shot to the head with the pistol it was a blast and kept games moving SO fast.

I love the no shields/pistols matches. Those are a hell of a lot of fun!

The melee, the bunny hopping and the stupid shotty snipers is why I love COD4 so much more than halo 3.

You can tell which people just finished playing halo 3 as they are hopping around the maps in COD4 gettin their asses handed to them while they try to knife people.

I don't really think the shotgun is overpowered in halo 3, though. My fav gun in H3 is the BR and I always took down people with shotguns/swords/grav hammers with little trouble as long as I kept my distance.

It's not overpowered. It's been exactly the same in 3 iterations of Halo. It's just like it is in real life. Get shot with a shotgun at close range? Yea, you're dead. I don't see how that's hard to understand. Even if the first shot doesn't kill you, the ensuing wack will.

It's only effective at close range...anything more than that and you're on the receiving end of a kill. It's no different than being outgunned at long range by a guy with a sniper or even a BR. Or a rocket launcher at any distance, or a sword at short distance. I certainly don't go around with a shotgun as my main weapon on every map...if a close range encounter comes up I bust it or a Mauler out...otherwise its straight BR.

actually it was more powerfull and reloaded faster in halo 1

Man, I got Shotty Snipers on the Pit last night, which sucked. Bungie must have upped the frequency on the servers again.

saying shotty is stupid, shotgun is two syllables and so is shotty, what is the point in shortening a word when it doesnt even make it shorter? Anyway, in halo 1 we would have 4 person multiplayer matches at my apartment and our favorite level by far was the shotgun level with the small stage and no shields.

Shotty-Snipers on the Pit is actually fun IMHO. That's the one map I truly enjoy that gametype on.

Compare how many hits it takes to kill someone with a battle rifle and tell me how a one or two shot kill with a shotgun at ANY range makes sense.

Now you're just exaggerating a bit much Mugsy. Battle rifle at long rage >>>>> Shotgun at long range... medium range too. Short range, you're toast if you've got a BR vs Shotgun

Exaggerating? 😕 Why are you bringing up how useful they are at different ranges? 😕 You could probably take 10 hits from a battle rifle regardless of range and not die. You could probably take 15 hits from an assault rifle at close range and not die. The shotgun does a disproportionate amount of damage relative to other weapons. Granted, it's only useful at short range. But the damage it does at short range is more than any other weapon at any range other than the sniper rifle or a melee from behind.

Melee is overpowered too.

A lot of people complain that the needler is overpowered, and I would tend to agree that it's an overly powerful weapon at medium range. But if the needler is overpowered, then so is the shotgun.

Edit: I think you may have been confused that I said "at ANY range" in my previous post. What I meant was "tell me how it makes sense that there exists a range where you can get a one or two shot kill with the shotgun."

i kinda think it makes good sense. if you are right next to the person and hit him with a shotgun, he dies almost instantly (depends where you aim). the battle rifle can take someone out in like 2-3 trigger pulls medium to long range.

i dont think the shotgun is overpowered simply because of its short range limitation. i cannot tell you how many times i've made the mistake of picking up a shotgun instead of a BR only to die fast as hell in a medium to long range fight against a BR.

edit: i do think it takes really little skill to use the shotgun, so i much prefer other weapons.

I agree with those points. You can easily take someone out with 2 or 3 shots depending on how dead on you hit them in the head with a BR. Shotgun, you usually have to shoot them square on to kill them when you're close. Sometimes I'll shoot them in the leg only to get wacked and they won't die. I disagree that it takes little skill. Yes, it owns noobs really really easily who just try and melee you, but most of the games i play now have people who know what they're doing so I either have to crouch to get the jump on them or to feign just having another weapon, only to strafe between pillars until they get close so i can switch to the shotgun. With the shotgun it's all about timing and how well you can move in close encounters. This holds especially true when dealing with more than one enemy. Usually with the shotgun, it is difficult to take out more than one person, so using it on multiple enemies in an open location equals either you dying or only taking out one guy (unless they blow, I really can't see you taking both out with a shotgun or even being able to switch without getting decent cover).

umm, you need to watch the guy with the maulers that leap from across the map to melee

Got any video clips of that that you can send me?

I don't have video, but I've seen it happen. It doesn't appear to happen when I melee myself though, which makes me wonder if it's just compensating for lag or something.

Hey mugs - sorry to attack you/argue earlier in the thread. No point in arguing...it is what it is, they can adjust the damage if they wanted to but after the 3rd iteration it's the same. I'll just let it be. 🙂

PS - the video you're talking about is probably a bug. In Halo 2 there was a "fly across the map" bug with the sword...with as many people that play it, it's impossible not for someone to discover new ways to exploit bugs/loopholes. (the sword trick, super jumping, unlimited invisibility, infinite ammo, etc from Halo 2)

It's all good. I know it won't change, but I like to bitch about it anyway. 😛 I don't have many complaints about the game, and the ones I do I deal with. I didn't like the melee power when I started playing, but I compensated by learning to play that way. I didn't like the driving controls, but I got over it. I don't like the shotgun's power, but I do my best to recognize the gun and act accordingly (or after I respawn I know who has the shotgun so I go and kill him 😛). It is what it is, but if we didn't bitch about games here we wouldn't have as much to talk about. 😛

Next time you see it happen, maybe fire up Theatre after the match and record a video of it 🙂 I really dont think I've ever seen it. 🙁

please note: this is in no way saying "I DONT BELIEVE YOU", I'm just interested in what is happening.

The only problem with Shotty Snipers is that every once in a while you run into a guy that is so good that he makes the game no fun for everybody else.

I actually don't like shotty snipers because the game becomes so one dimensional: either hide and try to snipe people or hide and try to jump people with shot gun.

It got weird again last night. I had two games of Team Battle Rifle and one of Team Sniper. Has there been any news about changes in the servers?

I think they've introduced a bug in the respawn logic as well last night. I had several instances where I got respawned in a spot where there was somebody else behind my back, causing me to die very quickly.

I got respawned right behind a guy, causing him to die very quickly.

I'm liking the addition of team snipers and BR. Nothing like hitting someone once with the sniper gun and capping him in the face with the magnum.

I don't like the new addition of team BR's. I could see if they made it like team SWAT in H2 where it one head shot kills, but the only difference is you start with the BR and thats it. Out of 10 games last night I bet I had team BR's come up at least 6 times.

I like team BRs. It's no different from regular Team Slayer except you start with the BR and AR instead of just AR - and the BR is one of my favorite weapons. 🙂 The only problem is that when I get a Team Slayer game I sometimes forget that I need to pick up the BR. It really made me appreciate the BR on maps like The Narrows where there's a lot of fighting from a distance on the bridge.

Had Team BRs on Guardian, which at first I thought was kind of odd because it's such a small map - but it was actually really good. Totally different playing experience than team slayer on Guardian.

Yeah, I like it a lot. I loved picking off all those shotgun whores. 😛

Alright, I put a video in my file share called lunge 2. It's most evident when you watch it in slow motion. It only seems to happen sometimes, so it may be related to lag or there may just be some distance threshold that you have to be within to do a melee.

In any event, I have more kills than deaths with melees, so I'm not really complaining.

Looking at the chain of replies above, I should note that I'm talking about the "lunge" when you melee not a "leap across the map" per se. I think that was just an exaggeration. It does seem like you melee from an unreasonable distance at times, but it is what it is.

On the topic of maulers and shotguns - in EGM they had an interview with some Bungie guys this month, and it sounded like they're thinking about dialing back the Maulers because they're too powerful. 😛 Not sure about the shotgun, I don't think that will change. I guess it's somewhat more acceptable for shotgun to be so powerful because it's a two-handed weapon. With Maulers you can carry a longer range weapon like the spiker at the same time.
