'Halo 3' Packaging Scratches Disks

Tuesday September 25, 3:15 PM EDT

SEATTLE (AP) ? Within hours after die-hard fans finally got their hands on a copy of "Halo 3," blogs brimmed with reports that special limited-edition packaging is scratching the video game disks.

Microsoft Corp., which owns the studio that makes "Halo 3," responded quickly on its Xbox Web site with details for a replacement program. Customers can fill out a form and send in their scratched limited-edition disks for a free exchange through the end of December.

A Microsoft spokesman and a member of the company's outside PR firm did not immediately respond to calls and e-mails from The Associated Press requesting more information.

Microsoft is selling the limited-edition version, which comes in a tin decorated with the "Halo 3" logo, for $70. A regular copy of the game costs $60, and a "legendary" version, which comes with a replica of the helmet worn by game protagonist Master Chief, costs $130. The game officially went on sale early Tuesday.

Richard Mitchell, the lead writer of the Xbox 360 Fanboy blog, said one of the disks that came in his limited-edition set is scratched but the damage didn't seem to interfere with its playing.

The AP received several review copies of "Halo 3" in limited-edition tins. Both the game disk and an "essentials" disk had come loose from plastic housing designed to keep them in place. The game disk had been scratched but seemed to work fine.

Microsoft has been plagued by Xbox 360 problems in recent months. In July, the software maker said it would spend more than $1 billion to repair broken Xbox 360 consoles, and in August it disclosed that some Wireless Racing Wheel game controllers were overheating and smoking.

Since its launch, the Xbox 360 has outsold Sony Corp.'s next-generation PlayStation 3 console, but it hasn't been as popular as Nintendo Corp.'s Wii. Investors and analysts are watching whether Microsoft can turn a profit in the division that makes the Xbox 360. Microsoft, which expects to hit that milestone in the current fiscal year, has said "Halo 3" is one part of its strategy for reaching that goal.

Like I said in the other Halo 3 threads, they need to pull the Limited Editions off the shelves. We're talking about (by my estimation) an 80%+ defect rate. Absolutely unacceptable.

I bought the limited edition and it had some scratches. The game plays fine...but there were definitely scratches. I agree that they need to pull it off the shelf. MS just can't catch a break. They really need to focus on manufacturing quality from this point forward.

I bought the limited edition this morning before I went to work. My brother in law did the same. About an hour after I made my purchase I'm sitting at my desk and my brother in law calls me up. He says "check your discs, mine are all scratched up". So I went out to the truck opened up the tin and sure enough my discs had come lose from the plastic holders and they were both scratched. I call up Wal-mart tell them what happened and they said to bring it back. The guy at the service counter gives me a new limited edition tin. I have him open it to check the disc and they had come lose and were scratched as well. He opened up 6 different ones before we found one that wasn't scratched.

If your getting the Limited Edition check your disks before you leave the store.

Exactly what happened to me (except I was in GameStop). However I knew about the scratch problem beforehand and asked to open the LE in the store. Sure enough, scratched. They opened up quite a few LEs before they pieced me together a good set (two unscratched discs).

I originally bought the SE version, but it was scratched badly. Luckily I also knew about it in advance and checked.

Instead of going through 10 different copies of the SE game, i just bought the standard game.

Wow, I don't know anyone that tried to buy the SE version.

My second disc was loose with some minor scratches, although I'm not too concerned. If you get a defective one and can't return it for some reason, Microsoft will replace it if you pay to mail your disc to them (can't be too expensive). It's a pain but it's better than nothing.

And wait how long for a replacement? Knowing MS and all the returns they will most likely get, it could be a long time.

My game disc is slightly scratched, the extra's disc is fine. I'm holding off on sending it in as so far there have been no issues with the disc. If I start having issues as I play the game I will certainly send it in. I'm hoping I can finish the game and then I can take a "Halo-break" and send it in for a new one.

So what's the deal? Are the discs totally unplayable?
I mean if the disc is scratched, what's the percentage of discs that are unplayable? I would just play the game if the disc was scratched........... as long as it worked!

Are people just complaining because a new product is scratched but plays perfectly fine?

Sending anything in/RMA is a Pain in the ass and usually takes forever to get your stuff back. If I can, I try and fix myself, but in this case of course, I would'nt with a disc 😉

The game disc in my Limited Edition case was lose, but there was only a couple very minor scratches that don't warrant the hassle of getting another disc. The essentials disc was secure, though.

If i'm buying a $70 game, i want it to at least start out in perfect condition. You also can't really know if the scratch is going to affect something down the line. Better to return it now than find out weeks down the line when you've lost your receipt.

Yes, but sometimes going through the hassle to return something and waiting a week to a month+ for a replacement to get back to you........... If the disc/s work and there were no problems after 24 hours of use, I would'nt bother sending it in myself.
Only kids get rid of the boxes/receipts that come with an item= Live and learn. I keep all my stuff an easy 4-5 years before I trash anything.

The big deal is that the game may start and play but the further you get in the game you may hit the scratch and realize days or weeks from now that the scratch is to blame.

Ok, wait 'till you beat the game...... Whatever! Don't whine if the disc is scratched and there are no problems with the game/disc/play wise!
Go return it and get a pristine disc, take it home and YOU make the scratches yourself

Have you rented HD DVD's or Blu Ray movie discs as of late? I've run into ZERO problems with scratches and I rent through NetFlix.

Everyone at my company got a free copy of the limited edition, and no one has had any problems with their discs. 0% failure rate out of the 30 we got.
