Halo 3 matchmaking

I am pretty new to this halo stuff, but man matchmaking SUCKS.

Me and my buddy will play, I am ranked 7, he is 11...we seem to get matched against kids who are ranked 8 with only 4 games under there belt and stomp us to the ground...this goes for a few more matches, then we get a team that is 'fair'.....rank 15 with over 1000 ranked played, or something and we stomp them to the ground....

we play ranked 2's mostly....I swear half of these kids are 50's recreating accounts to hit 50 again....

is it because bungie reset the stats and such? Also, how does it work now? i see I have a 7 next to my name in 2's, but I have 1's next to my name in other ranked games...4v4, 6v6, etc?

It's because of those free trial cards that are everywhere for xbox live. They do it either because they cheated and were banned, or they just like starting over in order to do exactly what you're talking about - beat people really hard. I personally don't see why they just don't play social matches then as the people playing in there are generally pretty bad/new to the game too because of all the guests. Really, bungie's ranking system didn't work in Halo 2 for multiple reasons and only encouraged cheating - I have no idea why they thought they should try it again; maybe only to save face.

I don't know how the new ranking system works, but I'm sure you can find info on bungie.net

I am really new to FPS shooters on consoles, but damn it seems so unfair to match like that.....I have actually played against people who are 50's rank 2 generals and shit...I get shot two times and I am dead with that crappy auto gun that you typically start off with slayers...not the BR, the other one.

no, you dont get shot 2 times with the assault rifle and die. that is just not possible unless you are playing with no shields.

also, don't worry about your rank, just play for fun. you win some you lose some. the number is nothing but that ... a number.

the whole rank thing being visible to the end users is what causes people to create 2nd accounts and stuff, which imo is lame. the rank should be hidden.

The number is not a HUGE deal for me or my friend, as it's a pretty fun game actually....It is just that matching us with people who are ungodly is just a joke....bugs me 🙁.

I hope GoW2 online wont be like this...haha. I heard CoD4 is horrible too, with it's matchmaking.

I assume when you say you play ranked 2's you're referring to Team Doubles. Unfortunately, this is the playlist that most people that create new accounts use to get their accounts back up in as it's generally the fastest. (I've seen 50's with 17 games played).

The Halo 3 system really seems broken at lower levels. It doesn't seem to take into account the margin of a win, just that a win is a win. Therefore, when people create new accounts that are really good it doesn't know how to match them until they play 30+ games, and by that time they're 50's. Going in with a friend doesn't help because the system tries to match like parties, i.e. if you're going in with a friend, the other team will most likely both be in the same party also. This will also cause more matches with more experienced players. To decrease the change of that you would have to go in alone, which kindof defeats the purpose of Doubles, more so if you want to play with a friend. There is no good way around it if you want to play Doubles unfortunately.

Also, luckily Bungie hasn't reset the stats for Halo 3, or the problem would be even worse.

Every Ranked Playlist is independent, so your number in each Ranked Playlist is initially 1. However, if your Total Highest Skill is a 20, you'll probably be playing with people that are around 20 if you switch to a different playlist.

That became longer that I intended, but hopefully it clears some stuff up.

What else can they really do anyway? Some matches suck, some don't, that's just the way it goes. Even if matchmaking was perfect it doesn't guarantee a good round of play since you could be paired up with a bunch of jackasses.

Matchmaking can be annoying and is far from perfect, but I usually have had more fun than not playing Halo 3 as well as COD4.

They match you based on your current skill rating. I don't know what they could do to rank you more fairly than that. The people are really good skip past the low skill ratings really fast. Maybe, you know, you just aren't that good (yet)? There is a lot you can learn from how your opponents kill you. It's not all just point and shoot, there's tactics involved.

I usually play social nowadays, because it's just more fun IMO. People care too much in ranked. I went back to ranked briefly last night, and our team just fell apart when one of our teammates kept shooting at us (not killing anyone, just taking our shields down). After the game the guy who did the best on our team was screaming at me, telling me I sucked because I had a bad score.

There are a lot of good players in social too. When I play in social I'm always matched with captains, majors, commanders and colonels. Brigadiers and generals sometimes too. It does match you and splits up the teams) based on skill, just not quite as strictly as in ranked.

I am not great mugs, I am not pro yet, haha...granted I have stomped teams as well...me and my buddy, in slayers, end up being nearly even...14 kills, 13 kills--right next to eachother in stats....we are the same way when losing , haha...only 3-4 kills each....I just learned to sticky kids...that is hilarous.

Oh--and nade spamming is oh, oh so fun.

parsley007, thanks for that--I assumed that much.

I thought Halo 3 had the best matchmaking I've seen in a game. My games were always really close. Too bad the core gameplay was boring as shit.

COD4 + Halo3 matchmaking = perfection

I have not seen CoD4, but so far I have been matched with players who seem to be 50's....ungodly!

But 25% of the teams I play are also horrible...10% are very very even matches, which are very fun...ending up 24-25, or 23-25.

Yeah it's convenient when you have to hold off the bad guys, and you just happen to be standing where a bunch of people have died, thus there are grenades all over the place. 😉

But what works better than grenade spamming is using a grenade to soften up a target that is coming around a corner. Toss the grenade so he's near it when it goes off, then you just have to hit him with a few shots to finish him off. Do you watch your radar? I play with a friend who didn't even realize there was radar until recently. Get good with the BR and the Carbine. Both are extremely effective medium range weapons.

If you're playing team doubles, stay with your teammate. It's very easy to take someone out by double teaming them. Why don't you play Team Slayer more? Skill ratings are per-playlist, and I'm pretty sure Team Slayer and Lone Wolves get the most players, so the ratings will be more accurate there. I think you're also likely to encounter more people who work together well in Team Doubles, and people who don't work together well in Team Slayer. Working together makes a BIG difference.

I am learning to watch my radar, it helps a crapload I have to admit.

I am REALLY good and punching people to finish them off though...and the sword is so satasfying....especially against those 40-50's we randomly get.

I have noticed that shooting the head, compared to teh body is ZERO difference.

We play a lot of doubles, we are a pretty good pair. We play at eachothers places pretty often, so we can see how we each play...damn it was cool beating a dual team ranked 42, and 44...we BARELY beat them.

They congratulated us and were 'impressed'...who knows.

We play a lot of doubles slayer....holding onto that skull is fun. My favorite is holding king of the hill type.

We are starting to get to know certain maps, where certain weapons are....we are getting good at double teaming them now.

I HATE snipers though, I just dont have the reaction time with it like I do in counterstrike with keyboard mouse.

so far it's new/interesting...I like it.

and GTA4 online...hilarous!

shooting to the head only makes a difference once you have drained their shields. then it's 1 hit kill (for some guns).

Just play and gain experience. I too have had this happen and I just keep playing til I am as good as they are.

Yeah, only some guns do headshot damage. BR does, I don't think the assault rifle does.

Knowing the maps helps a LOT. Knowing what to do at the beginning of a game helps a LOT too.

Example - At the beginning of a game on The Pit, I go straight for the BR and two sticky grenades, then I go for the hallway with the active camo. As soon as I turn the corner I toss a grenade so it lands just past the other end of the hallway. It blows up the exploding barrels and kills the guy who was trying to do the same thing I was doing. Those exploding barrels are very useful, especially when you have a sniper rifle. If you see a guy running past one, don't bother trying to shoot him - shoot the barrel and watch him fly. That is, if you have a sniper rifle or you can hit it with a grenade. Don't try to blow them up with the assault rifle. 😉 On Snowbound if you want the ghost, the fastest way is to go up and over the base, NOT around it. Same with Isolation - shortest distance is a straight line. Of course you better hope one of your teammates goes for the rocket launcher. With a mongoose you can get to the rocket launcher at the exact same time you'd get to the ghost, and rockets beat ghosts. On High Ground, if you start inside the base you get first dibs on the rocket launcher. Hop on a mongoose and and there's nothing the other team can do to stop you. Of course you better hope your team backs you up, or you're going to lose that rocket launcher. On Construct, if you start on the side with the gold elevator, you can jump and toss a grenade just to the left of the right side purple elevator - big explosion, and anyone who tried to go over the top on that side is dead.

Like I said, knowing the maps helps a LOT. Not only so you can do the stuff I listed (which mostly works against bad players), but so you can AVOID having it happen to you.

The sword is a fun and frustrating weapon. It works best when your team works with you.

If you don't like sniping, use the shotgun. Of course Team Snipers sticks you with the crappy Magnum, but I actually had a Team Snipers game where I had the most kills with the Magnum. AND we won, AND I went 16-5, AND I was MVP. :Q http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Ga...56481440&player=mugsNJ Despite the fact that nearly everyone in the game uses ~5 weapons almost exclusively, just about any weapon has strengths and can be effective. Take advantage of the strengths of your weapons, and be aware of their weaknesses. DON'T run out into the middle of a field on Valhalla armed with an assault rifle and a magnum - you'll die. If you have a short range weapon, stick to places where you can't be attacked from a distance. The assault rifle is misnamed. It's really a SMG, and the SMG is more like a machine pistol. You need to be pretty close to use the assault rifle effectively.

hold on...by drain there shields, you mean when you are basically in alert mode or whatever where it goes beep, beep, beep until it regens? at that point it's a one hit kill no matter where I hit them, so I have noticed.

Damn do the shotguns suck for me, they take 2-3 hits to kill typically, whether close or long range.

Thanks for the info mugs, maybe I wont suck too much tonight ^_^.

I am REALLY glad bungie decided to create that stay crouched button, so I do not have to hold it, man that sucked...makes for easy blade kills.

ViviTheMage,

You're really just going to have to learn how the weapons work and how to use them to become effective. I still suck but don't play much. I made a thread long ago about not understanding how to kill in halo, you seem like you're hammering into them but yet you still die. You have to break their shield to do any damage or hope to get a kill, if your opponent sees he's broken your shield then they smell blood.

"breaking" or "draining" your opponents shield is what you talked about "whoop, whoop" Look at your heads up display - one bar for health, the other for shield. When you have no shield you are going to be dead very quickly if engaged with somebody.

Shotgun at long range or even medium? Forget about it unless of course you already drained their shield.

Just keep practicing and learning, there really is a good amount of strategy with the weapons and the better players know how to use them. IMHO it's a steep learning curve to really play multiplayer, you can't just run around and gun. Which is why I suck so much at halo - that's how I play.
