We're glad to see Infinity Ward return with its standout Call of Duty series. We're even more pleased that it didn't return to World War II. Frankly, if we had to shoot yet another M1 Carbine at Nazis, our heads may have exploded out of boredom.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Combat takes the series, as the title so obviously suggests, into more recent times. As a U.S. Marine, you'll plunge into hostile territory throughout Russia, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East, waging a fictional war against a nefarious group known as The Four Horseman. The game seems to offer much of the same gameplay present in Call of Duty and its sequel: straightforward single-player stages highlighted by some of the most intense action sequences out there. While the first Call of Duty's single-player campaign was a thrill ride, the multiplayer is what kept it alive. Infinity Ward is switching a few things up by implementing a class-based gameplay system where each type has different special abilities, primary weapons, side arms, and grenades. Based on what we've seen thus far, and Infinity Ward's development history, we're quite confident Call of Duty 4 will turn out well.
