From day one after Bungie showed screen shots, Halo was graphics to me. I knew the story would suck, the weapons would be typical made up sci-fi crap. I never understood how anyone thought the game would be great on any level besides graphics. Maybe it's the fact I find shooting Aliens on spaceships boring, but Halo was bl3h to me. Never played Halo 2, won't play 3. But I'm not the typical gamer, as such MS will make billions off Halo 3 :)

Originally Halo was much more than graphics and shooting aliens. It was basically a tactical strategy game in the vein of Myth, another game that was much more than graphics.

EDIT: Come on man. This is eye candy? Half-Life looks much better than it.

i wish i could play the original halo (3rd person tactical/action game)... making it an FPS for the xbox ceratinly made it a hit, but i think the 3rd person game would have been much more fun in the end

I just know that someone's going to take a shot at me for my GS review of Halo for the PC. I mainly gave it that score because it really WAS in every way superior to the Xbox version.

Really? Halo PC felt to me like a badly ported, junky-feeling crappy FPS. They didn't design it for PC, and they didn't even make it feel like it was meant to be played on PC. Movement was slow, looking was bad, graphics were crappy... etc etc.

I agree. I remember it running like crap on my Radeon 9700 Pro (which if you'll recall was a quite high-end video card at the time). Didn't run well until I got a 6800GT as I recall...not that I ever really bothered to play for more than a few minutes anyway. Never mind that the game was originally released for a system with the equivalent of a Geforce 3/4 :p

I've been playing Halo PC lately, and it runs pretty well on my 7900GTX (16xAF, HQ, supersampling transAA, clamped LOD bias, gamma correct AA).

Halo is a good franchise. All things considered, including popularity, it is indeed the King of shooters.

So yes, I dont mind Halo.
IMO, it IS indeed the king of shooters.. whether I or anyone else likes that or not. Its got to the most popular, and possibly the best selling FPS ever.

Picking a "best FPS game ever" is like trying to pick your favorite poopsickle.
BF2 is buggy. Quake4 has gameplay from about 10 years ago. HL2 is pretty damn good actually, and prob would be most peoples pick (but to be fair, still old gameplay styles with new graphics).

Quake Wars appears to be what could be the king, new age massive battle gameplay like Battlefield, but its actually not programmed by an ape.
UT07 is unreleased, same as QW.

Considering all of this, I'd have to pick the Halo series as the overall king.

I have Halo for PC and its a good game. The key to Halos success is the fact I can lay back in a couch and play on an Xbox with a pretty decent shooter.

Or I can sit here like a robot at a desk meant for an executive and play Counterstrike Source.
I dont have any Xbox (but plan on the 360 when Halo3 is released) but I like the idea of relaxing on a couch. :)

BF2 has never been buggy enough for me to regularly interfere with playing, across several systems both AMD/nvidia/intel/ATI. It's still my favorite, but I REAAAAAAAAALLLY want to start playing some next gen games like Crysis, Splinter Cell, Assassin's Creed, etc etc

For me it seems BF2 disconnects from servers occasionally. Not sure if its the servers or the game code. I dont have this in CSS games regardless.
I also find its lack of widescreen support unexcusable, but thats not so much a defect.

Other than that I cant complain, but my load times are lessened by a RAID-0 array. And the rest of the system is more than developers deserve, no one should have to buy a Geforce 7900GTX and fast A64 or C2D to play a game like this.

I like that system, 3.71ghz C2D. Swap that x1900xtx out for a 7950gx2 and you'd be set, even for EAs next BF mutation.

I am one of the few that have held to the BF boycott. I bought BF2 but on launch day, I had no idea they wouldnt ever add widescreen support or be so slow to fix issues, or streamline their code. I havent purchased any of the expansions, and wont buy BF2142.
Saving that money for QuakeWars and UT07... will be playing demos of both of these before purchasing though.
Had enough of buying crappy shooters.

Getting burned out on almost all the gaming formulas that have been invented in the past 25 years. For me BF2 gameplay represents the end of FPS.

I think games are going to have to start telling a better story someday soon. I was left a little admonished lately after finishing Quake 4. I forced myself through it, like I do all the shooters I buy. And I'd like my $40 back but I'd really like the 10 solid hours I spent beating it back as well.

That was the beauty to adventure gaming, the technology didnt have to be cutting edge, you didnt need a 7900GT or X1900XT. And people still wanted to buy and play them.

Its STILL tough to beat Monkey Island 1 or 2.. or the later ones for that matter.

For now, it's the king of shooters on the consoles. But, when Resistancethe Fall of MAn comes out...:)

IMO resistence looks like it's gonna sssuck

Back to halo, I will tell you my little story.

When I first played halo on xbox, it was an amazing game. It had awesome graphics, really great AI, and it had this "epic feel" that's hard to describe but those halo1 fans out there know what I'm talking about. Not to mention the loading was seemless which even today is hard to find in a game.

The game just owned in every way (besides the often repetitive levels THE LIBRARY OMG)

It had Co-op which was an amazing feature for such a great and fun game. multiplayer was great too, I can't count how many lan parites I had on saturday nights.

Sadly, halo 2 didn't have the spark that halo 1 had. It felt cheap, cartoony, and just bleh. Sure it had better graphics, but that's about it. It just didn't have the feel halo 1 had. Halo 2 did do xbox live well though, I still play h2 on live. I was very dissapointed with halo 2 to say the least. They butchered the plot too (are we supposed to feel bad for the covenent now? wtf?)

I donno, but seeing as halo is the only game that means anything to me, I damn hope they make the last one count. Bungie did magic with the first xbox, I hope it can do it again with the 360.
