Hallelujah, I've seen the light! (Pocket PCs manhandle Palm OS machines)

I've used my 3150 ipaq for a day now and I gotta wonder how I ever got by so long on a 3xe. Quite literally, PPC machines are miniature computers whereas Palms feel still feel like overgrown organizers. Much better handwriting recognition, wasted all that effort learning that retarded graffiti when I didn't have to. :|

I don't really see any inherent disadvantages to the PPC platform over palms. All of palms advantages (compatibility, software library) mainly come from momentum and a larger installed base rather than better technology.

Yeah yeah some people say that PPCs have bad battery life, but not the b&w ipaq I got. Ran it for half a day on and off and only sucked down maybe 1/8 of the battery meter. Palms are cheaper? Nope cause this ipaq can be had for around 200, I got mine for 160. Certainly not much more than the 120 I paid for my 3xe when the better technology of the ipaq is considered.

So what does that leave for Palm?

Pocket PCs are more expensive. Look at the color ones. I like all the software available for the Palms. I would look into a Pocket PC but I have spent way too much on Palm software. 😀

Yep, the 3150 is an excellent bargain at under $200. Make any non-color Palm look overpriced 😉

Anyway, color PocketPC's can be had for $299 (Casio EM-500, 16-bit color) and even less (HP 525, 256 colors). That's less expensive than the m505 AND the m500. So while color iPAQ's may be expensive, you have to look at what other manufacturers offer. You can't just make a statement like that without knowing anything about the devices offered.

iPAQ's have been high in price b/c the market can bear that price. The 3650 is $500. The 3635 is $599 and the 64MB 3670 is $650. But that is only b/c people are willing to pay that price. But this is the exception, NOT the rule.

The Casio models are more in line with Palm pricing as shown above. The EM-500 is a virtual bargain given its features.

I think it depends on what you are using it for. The palm is definately easier to use and more functional for work as an organizer. For instance, I can find any appointments for any given day this month in 4 button clicks (including turning on the power). It takes me litterally 2 or 3 seconds to find that info. Go on and try that on any CE device. I can usually take notes on the phone without the other person even knowing that I'm writing on my Visor. Graffiti is harder to learn, but is MUCH faster to use.

On the other hand, CE is prettier.

To make an appointment on my PocketPC, all I have to do is hit the appointment button and click what time I want it set for. How hard is that?

As for Grafitti, it's CRAP compared to Microsoft Transcriber. With Transcriber, you can write on the screen normally (in cursive or print) and it automatically converts your handwriting to text. Nothing is faster as far as inputing text.

For example, I write my name, Brandon, in cursive and it automatically outputs it to the screen as "Brandon" in text. Same way for words I write in print.

Man, did you read my first post? I said I paid 160 for my 3150 ipaq! If that's not cheap I don't know what is.

Not really, you should try using a PPC for a day. It's not any harder to use than a Palm, I've owned both.

That's not true either, transcriber writes damn fast once I unlearned graffiti. 😉 Especially when you factor in the learning curve for graffiti and that there really isn't one for transcriber.

Oh man. Those Stinger (PocketPC-based) cell phones need to hurry up and get here!!!

Trium Mondo
PC-Ephone
Sagem

Samsung has a color Palm-based cell phone coming out in September. I could actually care less for color right now, but if the advantage doesn't come at a premium, ...
