I need to format my HDD, but I don't have the HalfLife CD or case (which has the CD-key on it). So I have a few questions:

1) Is there any way to extract the cd-key from the halflife installation?
2) If I just backup the folder that HalfLife is in and then copy that back to my HDD after I reinstall, will everything work? Or are there some special reg keys I have to apply?

If anyone has a suggestion about how to do this, feel free...

In win2k try current user\software\valve\hlaflife\settings\key.....
THere will be a number like xxxxxxxxxxxxx(that many) and that is your key. :)

Derrrr:confused:
You guys, you can get it from either. I have done it. Look at my post.
I tell you my secret, since you dont think it can be done.
Do a search (find) in regedit using your cdkey (not you konichiwa) and walla(dont put in the: " - " )

That worked for me when I reinstalled the same OS (reformat and reinstall of Win98). When I installed a different OS (removed Win98 and installed Win2k) I had to reinstall Half Life. But I didn't mess with it at all as far as registry keys and so forth because I have the CD-key.

Only thing you need after a new install is the cd key again. I installed Half Life a long time ago, and many OS changes ago. I have it on my D: drive and after a fresh install of an OS I just make a new shortcut to the game and when I go to play, it just asks for the cd key again. I have even just transfered my HL folder to the other computers in my network so I did not have to install the game and then all the patches again. I think my friend and I both are running 4 systems from my original install. We just use our own cd keys after the transfering my HL folder over.

CYK is right about where the key is in the reg. For both 98 and 2K and XP.

Just a thought on CD keys. I always put the keys in a Access file when I get a new program. This is very helpful when changing on OS or reformatting. Everything is there on one printed page.

um, just get a cd marker and write it on the darn CD. I still don't know why cd's don't have em printed on it.
