Halflife 2 Sourcecode leaked?

http://pc.ign.com/articles/452/452844p1.html

October 02, 2003 - Gabe Newell, Head of Valve Software, creators of the Half-Life franchise, confirmed today that the apparent Half-Life 2 source code leaked today to the Internet is indeed not a hoax, or just a leaked HL2 SDK (Software Developer Kit) which would contain only tools, documentation and some sample code. Valve was able to determine that the code was apparently stolen by someone hacking into their email system and installing keystroke recorders on some systems through an apparent buffer overflow in Outlook's preview pane.

Mr. Newell adds, "What I'd appreciate is the assistance of the community in tracking this down. I have a special email address for people to send information to, helpvalve@valvesoftware.com. If you have information about the denial of service attacks or the infiltration of our network, please send the details...We at Valve have always thought of ourselves as being part of a community, and I can't imagine a better group of people to help us take care of these problems than this community."

It is unclear at this moment how the leak will affect the release of the game, and no suspects have been named.

Umm...Its wrong...but if someone has it could they run benchies so we get a better idea of what to expect 😉

I have read so much about this, since the very first reports started showing up about it being on the net.

Here is the jist of it, many people went through the code, some said it was a fake, some said it was real, some were undetermined. Some believe that it is a hoax by Valve themselves.

The funny thing is, Gabe did say what you quotes, but he only said it on a forum.. just one single forum (halflife2.net) he did not confirm it with any official news places, or even post it on their own website. Apparently some users of the forum don't even think it was Gabe that made the post, some think it may be the moderators (which have in the past, pretended to be Valve staff)

Also, a lot of people who went through the code say it doesn't really make sense. Gabe stated that it was stolen 2 weeks ago, Half Life was due to be released on the 30th. The code is just not near enough completed to be the real one.. there are also a lot of other suspicious things about the code that don't add up.

I'm not saying one way or the other, I haven't even seen the code, and frankly if I did... I wouldn't have the slightest clue if it were real or fake. Just stating what I have read so far.

If it is real, then it's very very bad news for Valve.

You've been here a year, magomago, time to learn what the search box does. Already threads on this in Off-Topic and Software.

it was probably in a feature freeze anyway. just bugfixes would have gone in between then and the release date. (which may have changed at this point, with the release being delayed.)
