i think what will happen is for the first so many months all packages will require the steam activation, which if the box in the shop states 'you must have an internet conncetion to be able to play this game' and preferably state 'broadband level connection desirable' then legally its correct and if you buy the game and dont have a net connection its your fault for buying it without reading the min specs (dont hit me for saying this, im talking from a legal standpoint, not my own view...lol)

but i reckon once Xmas has come and gone they will release a shop retail version that doesnt need an internet activation as by then the main threat from piracy is long gone.

im going silver thru steam tho, that way i dont have to worry about keeping discs in boxes (im terrible at that, even the skip doctor gave up and retired...lol)

Is it true you have to register it to play it? If so, looks like I will have to pass.

Yeah, Gabe doesn't want tin foil hat types playing it.

WTF? I'm a "tinfoil hat type" because I don't feel like giving their marketing department my information?

Yup.

Ok chief...how do you figure that? I'm not worrying about some vast conspiracy, I just don't want to get junk email and or phone calls because my information gets in some database somewhere. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

That's conspiracy talk. 'The beast' will have you! You'll be tracked everywhere on the internet! Valve will see your underwear! Those sneaky databases, somewhere!

You know that's not what I mean. I guess a rational answer is too much for you.

You mean we? Do you think we're watching you? If you think we are something to worry about, you must really be scared of they. You know, they're after you. They're closing in right now. TIN FOIL HAT, TIN FOIL HAT!!!

But I do think you're silly for not getting HL2 because you're afraid of junk mail.

It's all good... I just needed my coffee...all better. 😛😉

And, you're right. I'll probably break down and buy it when it drops to the $35ish level, and hopefully I'll have a nice new 6800GT by then.

I'll just do what I usually do for any registration that's forced on me...claim I was born in 1880, and I live in Iowa. :Q 😛

Why does activation take so long? I don't have the game yet nor have I D/Led it. Shouldn't activation just be like entering a CDKey or something?

Activation is really simple and tiny. The unlocking is what takes awhile. It's basically like waiting for it instal 5 CDs worth of data on your machine. You have the files after downloading or installing the retail discs, but it's not until you activate that it will decompress and then instal.

bah i guess owning normal half life and half life 2 normal edition doesn't net u half life source? grr no 16 bit mode for old cards? grrrr

Hurrah, my credit card came, i activated it, i bought HL2 silver and have been playing for most of this evening (afternoon for USA peoples) and im HAPPY 🙂

My reason for silver was because i love the original HL (and OpFor) but my discs were knackered beyond even the good Skip Dr's care, so i pay an extra tenner and i get the source version, plus the original version and various other things, sounds good to me.....had already preloaded most of the files, so took me around 20 minutes once i made payment (cuz it wanted to download HL Source as well)

i havnt gotten all that far, waaaayyy too much fun chucking things at guards....hehe.......

simple note to those people considering not buying it cuz they dont agree with steam activation or any other reason (folks without net-connection exempted from this statement, i did check the box in the shops this afternoon, it doesnt state that you have to activate online by putting net connection in minimum requirements, im sure legally thats wrong):
please, just buy it, forget making a stand, its only a game, not a war or godly disaster, you really wont regret it unless your someone who doesnt enjoy FPS games whatsoever in the slightest, and even then you might be pleasantly surpised 🙂

its twisted, i've played cs source more then hl2😛 like 3 hrs to 1 hr for hl2. i felt more like quick killing😛

hl2 does make doom3 look like the giant turd it was though...

just started playing. the game's pretty good so far. only played about 15 mins and that's like 5 minutes more than i played doom 3
