half sized programs with dual monitors?

Hey guys, I am running an ATI 8500dv and a generic pci video card using the sis 300/305 chipset, i believe. Now this is the problem: With some programs, notable brittanica and norton antivirus email scanner (the regular interface works well enough) the programs only show their left half of the window. This is very odd, I can't drag the right side to normal viewing, and obviously, I can't read where I can't see, nor click where I may need to. Do you guys have any solutions for this or workarounds (besides disabling one monitor, which does help, but is annoying...)?
