Half of partitioned missing !!!

I just bought a new Maxtor 80 gig the other day and replace my old 80 gig samsung . I use the removable tray for my hard drive. I took the samsung drive out and slide the maxtor in.
Everything is working fine Maxtor after I installed Winxp pro. Now I want to add my 80 gig samsung to my system as a spare drive for saving all the data. The samsung was partitioned in two drive one for the operating system (Winxp pro) and the other partition is for my important data file.
I mounted my Samsung permanently into the system and connect it to slave on second IDE connector. When I boot it up it shows that I have D: drive only No E: It said I have to format the drive so I said yes since the D: drive contained all the operating system.
I went into Bios setup and it shows that I only have 35 gig.
I installed the Partition Magic hoping that I might show up there. But it only shows 35 gig. Where's the rest of the space go ?
I really need to access the other part of the partition to get some of the data there.

Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

Nick.
