Half My Body Goes Numb

Stunt

Diamond Member
I went to the family doctor today to tell her about a problem I've had over the past year. Every month to two months, my hand will start going numb and continue up my arm to my leg, face, lips and tongue. It only occurs on my left side and occurs allong with headaches. Other than this, I am perfectly healthy...good diet, non-smoker, no headaches (other times), no pain or anything else.

The doctor put me on 81mg ASA per day for the next 3 months until i get settled in my new city (moving in a week) and get an appointment with a neurologist. The pills are supposed to thin my blood to prevent a mini-stroke.

I really don't like taking drugs at all...I've never taken a pill since i was 7 and don't like the idea of my body being reliant on any sort of un-natural substance.

That being said, what do you guys think? 😛

stress. i had a family friend with the same problem because the son got rejected from UCLA and got stressed out (yea crazy azn moms)

You like taking drugs better than dealing with life after a stroke, trust me on this one.

Uh, it sounds like seeing a neurologist should be your top priority. Hope you're alright!

yeah. go now, not later. it could be serious.

Sounds like your doc is thinking blood clots in brain (TIA?). Gavinmoss is right though, have you consulted a neurologist?

Its been awhile since I've had any human bio classes, but it sounds like your brain isnt getting enough blood, so it tells the rest of your body that its in danger and some blood away from the extremidies and causes them to lose fealing. Or you could just have a Neurological problem where all the pain receptors in your brain have either stoped functioning or arent recieving the proper signals from each other neuron. But thats my opinion.

That's some scary sh!t there, Stunt. I have no idea what it is, but whatever it is it can't be good.

Keep on top of your doctor, see a specialist, and get multiple opinions from unaffiliated doctors.

The idea of a stroke is scary...but the sensation just feels like i slept on my arm wrong/went to the dentist at once, so it doesn't feel scary.

The numbness subsides within an hour...

I don't think it's stress related, and yes I intend on going to see a specialist on the matter.

I'm only 22 so it's odd...stroke shouldn't be a concern for ppl my age 😛

Taking that amount of ASA is nothing at all. All it is, is Aspirin, but at a very low dose...the normal dose for a headache is over 600mg, so dont worry about the drugs at least. I would be more worried about the numbness...

No Stress at all...i'm quite care free, and everything about the move is worked out.
I was at university when it first started, and have been unemployed the last 3 months, not a hard life at all.

There are a number of causes of this:
It could be migraine or a form of epilepsy.
Your doc is right to consider mini-strokes (TIAs) although this would be unlikely.

I appreciate that this may have been happening on and off for year but nevertheless, this needs urgent investigation by a neurologist.

My mom had something calls "bells paulsy" or something that sounds like that. Half her face would just suddenly go numb. I was too young to know/care what caused it, but she went to the doctor and I think one dose of pills cured it.

sometimes when i sit too much, my legs fall asleep and it spreads to my balls :Q

anyways get that checked out aspa, we don't need to be losing another good poster due to something dumb, there aren't enough around here to begin with. 😛

That's the first thing that came to my mind, as well. My mother-in-law has it and get occasional bouts of numbness. See that neurologist pronto!!

Heh, thanks 😀

I just asked my parents what my family history is like...
Mom's father died at 70 with a heart attack.
Mom's mother died at 68 with two forms of cancer.
Dad's father had single heart bypass surgery (alive - 83).
Dad's mother had 3 forms of cancer and diabetes (alive - 76).

Mom and Dad are both healthy, minus bad cholestrol.

Is this history good or bad?
