Minimum PC specifications for eagerly awaited title outlined - and new CS beta revealed

Developer Valve has announced details of the minimum and recommended specifications for the forthcoming Half-Life 2, which is believed to be on track to be completed this summer.

According to studio boss Gabe Newell, the basic spec will call for a 1.2Ghz processor, 256Mb of RAM and a DirectX 7 capable graphics card, while the company is recommending a 2.4Ghz processor, 512Mb of RAM and a DirectX 9 card for those who want to see the game in all its glory.

The specifications are somewhat higher than those which the company suggested last year - when base specifications like a 700Mhz processor and a TNT2 graphics card were being thrown around - but should still be well within the range of most current PC owners.

Valve has also announced that it is planning a time-limited beta of Counter-Strike: Source, the updated version of hugely popular online game Counter-Strike which runs on the Half-Life 2 engine. This beta, which will run over the Steam content delivery system, will initially be available to subscribers to the company's Cyber Cafe Program, and will then be opened up to purchasers of Counter-Strike: Condition Zero.

The beta test, which will be the first chance that gamers have to get their hands on a title based on the Source Engine (legitimately, at least), will take place later this summer.

so an A64 3200 wont run HL2 "in all of its glory" because its not 2.4Ghz? thats why i hate specs for games, they are always in intelihertz.

ROTFL...hey everyone, go out and upgrade (like many morons did last year) so that they can release new specs in a year when the game is still in dev.

Well, go from your perf. rating then. People who buy AMD's should be smart enough to know that their 3200 is effectively 3.2GHz in "intellihertz".

Neither of my rigs should have a problem running HL2.

Hahaha...Intellihertz.

Mind if I steal that?

While the sarcasm is certainly appreciated given the topic and source, you could have went with the PR from AMD for the recommended CPU requirement E.G. 2400+ 😉 The minimum was already spot on thanks to the T-Bird not having one.

Doug Lombardi: Having the best hardware is always going to be a plus. And we've designed the Source engine to take advantage of both today's leading components as well as those on the horizon. Having a fast processor and lots of RAM is always recommended for fast-paced 3D applications. $$However, in the case of Half-Life 2, the number 1 upgrade I can recommend is the latest GPU from ATI - that will result in more enhanced detail and superior framerate.$$
For reference, here are the system requirements - obviously the recommended does not represent the highest possible configuration, just one that should provide most if not all the detail at over 30 frames per second.

Min:
1.2 GHz Processor
256MB RAM
DirectX 7 graphics card
Windows 2000/XP/ME/98
Mouse
Keyboard

Preferred:
2.4 GHz Processor
512MB RAM
DirectX 9 graphics card
Windows 2000/XP
Mouse
Keyboard
little insert there 😉

EDIT: came accross a better article, which seems to also have a version of the source for the FP article.

I feel so sorry for those Geforce FX 5 series owners....

I upgraded to a 2400 XP and radeon 9600 pro last year. After a month of trying to get it stable, I then found out they pu HL" back. Damn them. Only really pushed my system using SWKOTOR, and that STILL crashes. I'm gonna upgrade graphics AFTER (if) they release the game. I see a 6800GT as nice investment

damn I hope they learn to use the words "or equivalent" in the specs, then maybe the number of lame posts about mhz will lessen

Or because its a standard of measurement.... Not to mention it would confuse people if he said 1.6Ghz AMD or 2.4Ghz Intel.
