Half-Life on 7

I?ve never played Half-Life ? it was just one of those games that I never got around to playing. Anyway, I got my hands on an original copy of the game for free (can?t beat that!) but I?m worried my computer is way too ?modern? for it. My computer specs are in my signature.

How will this run if I install it on Windows 7? I have 7 Professional, so should I install Half-Life using the XP Compatibility Mode? If so? how do I install it for XP in Windows 7?

I?m looking forward to catching up on this classic game!

Just register the game in steam and it will work for sure.

Other than that, if you plan on installing it via the cd, I have no idea - my guess is it will probably work.

I wasn't planning to use Steam (I don't use Steam at all for anything else). I was just goingn to install Half-Life off of the original CD.

I've heard of a high definition upgrade pack. What's the deal on that? I'd welcome the ability to play a classic game but not have to have it LOOK like a classic game.

If it installs and doesn't work, run the exe in XP compatibility mode. If that doesn't work, go into the HL folder and set all applications that might be in there to run in compatibility mode. If that doesn't work, use Steam. That's about all you can do.

Logical steps:

1. Install it and try it. If it works, great, if not, you've lost nothing.
2. Try it out in XP Mode, though XP Mode is not for gaming due to it's widely noted lack of hardware graphics acceleration.
3. Register it with Steam.

You probably shouldn't be thinking about using XP Mode if you don't really know what it is or how to use it...

XP Mode is not for gaming. It's for businesses to run old apps that never got updated.

Honestly, run it through Steam 🙂

Half Life is 10 years old. I wouldn't expect it to work properly on a modern operating system.

i play the source verison thru steam and it runs good
but i also have the original verison too on my steam account both work great !

My only experience was running it through steam and it worked well through there 🙂 Let us know if you try it outside of steam and what the results are?

the only problem I had with Half Life in Steam when playing it on Windows 7 RC x64 is that the game would crash after/around beating the final boss. Not that big a deal, but just a heads up.

you mean like an old Sierra CD? Do you have the key? if so then u can use steam. otherwise u gotta find the 1.1.1.0 patch. its very old but u can try it
