I have a half-life CD that I used online before there ever was Steam. I have never used it after Steam was released.

Can I sell it? Or, is it locked to my email?

Is there a way to check and confirm without locking it to my email address?

You want to check and confirm what?

It won't be locked to your email address (and steam ID) until you you log it in to steam.
Even then you can sell it (though not according to the steam eula) along with the login id and password.

Sure, you can sell it. As wannafly said a hl1 cd key is probably worth 5 bucks.

I have had a bunch of games that I do not play anymore. I have started selling them on ebay. I don't care that I can only sell it for $5.00.

I would like to confirm that the key has not been locked to my Steam ID.

I have a half-life platinum and have been using that after Steam came out. But, this has been a long time ago. I am not sure!

The last thing I want is to sell it and ship it and be contacted by the buyer telling me that he/she cannot use it.

IC, good question then.

OK, you have a steam account then. What games do you see in "My Games?"

If you do not own HL2, but HL1 is listed in "My Games" then, yes your cd key is linked to your steam ID.

In order to sell it, you would have to include your steam id password, only advisable when you only have the one game that you bought associated with your steam account. Other wise the person you give that info to would have acces to any or all of your steam games (such as HL2).

I have an original half-life game box. I also have a platinum half-life box (half-life, blue shift, opposing force and counter strike). So, I have 2 half-life CDs, one from my original box and one from my platinum box.
I also have half-life 2.
I see all these games in "My Games" under Steam.

I installed the platinum and used it with Steam. So, I hope that the CD key that is locked to my Steam account is the CD key from my platinum CDs and not from my original half-life CD.
Then, I will be able to sell my original half-life box without violating the Steam's license agreement, which I'd rather not do.

I think this is your situation (correct me if I'm wrong):

Obtained HL original.
Installed/played original.
Uninstalled original.
Obtained HL Platinum.
Installed/played HL Platinum.
Installed Steam and converted Plat installation.

As long as you never had the original HL key installed concurrently with Steam, then you can be sure that your key is NOT linked with your Steam account. However, if you installed HL1 and then installed HL Plat over it, I have no idea how Steam would deal with your situation. It's probably best to go to www.steampowered.com and ask about it.
