Half-Life in Win2k keeps saying Sp3 is required?

I just installed Win2k with Sp2 on my friend's computer. The installation went smoothly and everything is fine except Half-Life won't run. It keeps giving an error message saying that SP3 is required to run Half-Life. I assume that it's detecting the OS as WinNT instead of Win2k. How do I fix this? I can't find the compatibility tab so I can't even run it in Win98 mode. Thanks.

Have you updated the version of half-life? I think the early versions didn't check for the OS version very well and would confuse Win2k for WinNT.

Here's a question: did you upgrade your friend's computer from Win98 to Win2k?

I ask because I've never seen this type of error on my Win2k machine, but I've always installed it cleanly. I've not seen the error on about 12 other machines with HL and Win2k before either (even from original HL CD).

Try finding application compatibily update for Win2k. With it, you can specify an application to run in a version of Windows that will allow it to install, etc. You can specify an executable to run like it would under NT4/SP3. Appcompat.exe is the name of the file (I believe), and you should try it out. I've never had to run that, but it could solve your problems.

I get this message when I install half life and try to play it without updating. As non interleaved stated, download the update and apply it. It'll work after that....

<< Yeah, download the latest 1.1.0.7 HL update, and I'm sure it'll work fine. >>
