i never got into the whole counterstrike thing even though i got the game. it was really weird (maybe i'm just not with the half life times) you can buy half life and download counterstrike or buy counterstrike and download half life. so if i have the original counterstrike, using steam can i download hl2?

Yea, there was never any need to BUY counterstrike, was always a free download to owners of half life. I understand however that the recently released half life anthology does not work with counter strike.

You will need to buy HL2 (and should). That WILL also allow you to run CS Source.

BTW 0roo0roo, Portman still lives in my town where she graduated from the local High School. Portman's her stage name however...

Rehashing a slightly old thread. So, if I go to Steampowered.com and buy the $40 half-life 2 package, I can download and play CS:Source for free? No need to buy it additionally?

Just wondering 'cause all the stores around me only have HL2 for $50 (and more for DVD version).

With the new HL2 packages on Steam, it doesn't appear that you get CS:S with the base HL2 package. All that includes is the game itself (they schiest you outta HL2DM even, that is robbery!) and the tech demo level Lost Coast. Previously you got CS:S with the lowest package. So you can get the retail for $50 or pay $60 for the Premier pack (I would do this). Sucks that they haven't dropped the prices on anything HL2 for a whole year.

Bronze package or retail only comes with CS:S.

To the OP - when steam launched, Valve basically started to "give" HL and all its expansions for free to anyone having retail HL, CS, or DOD - so you basically got Half-Life Platinum for a lot less money.
To get HL2 or CSS, you have to buy it. Half-life 2 can be bought in stores (internet and B&M) for less than $19 now, so don't buy through Steam, where the Bronze Package is still more than $30, I believe.
