Ok, after asking what game to buy & getting lots of answers, I went with Half Life (Game of the Year Ed.) cuz it's "a classic" and it was only $19.99. I like it so far, actually kinda funny sometimes. I think I may have a bad CD, though - I need someone to tell me if this is supposed to happen:

I'm near the end of "We've Got Hostiles" - I've killed everything I could find & I get into an elevator going up. According to a few walk-throughs I've read, including this one, I'm supposed to "take the elevator to the surface" and kill some more military guys up there. Well...I get in the elevator & hit the button & it starts going up - after a short bit the CD loads the next section - and then I immediately start taking damage slowly (point or 2 at a time) until I'm dead. Also, I can't move in any direction, though I can shoot & look around. Every time, I die before getting up to the surface. Should I bring my disc back to EBX tomorrow?

ALSO, one other question - is there any way to load the whole disc onto my hard drive so I don't have to keep waiting for sections to load?

THANKS to anyone who can answer these questions, esp. the first one.

I'm confused. are you taking damage in the elevator or does it make it to the top and then you start taking damege. There are several (3 I think) soldiers at the top. you need to fight them.

That certainly shouldn't happen, the soldiers who are waiting for you aren't even near the elevator, so it's not possible that they could be shooting at you. I'd get another copy.

As for loading the whole disc to HD, you won't have to. All of the levels are already on the HD after you installed HL. I even play HL without inserting the CD.

Well I cant remember that part of the game. It was a really long time ago when I last played.

As far as the loading form the CD, there are nocd cracks out there so you don't have to use the cd. I can play mine without my cd, I just checked again to be sure. I do not remember if I had to copy some of the cd to my hdd or not. I thought there was an option during the install to do a full install. Then it would only ask for the CD to verify you own the game.

I've experienced that before. I think its a slight bug where you are getting killed by the elevator. You need to reload a game before getting to that point and move to the center of the elevator.

Hlaf-life is awesome nad I hope you have a good internet connection cause yoiu need to download the Day of Defeat mod for half-life.

And on your final question, I think if you install the latest patch, you do not need the cd-rom in the drive.

That is correct. After updating HL with the latest patch and accidentally forgetting to put in the CD before starting to play, I found out about this.

Thanks for all the info. It happens while I'm in the elevator going up - nothing is touching me, no military guys around at all. Tonight I'll try moving to the center of the elevator as was suggested.

Maybe I'll also try to find that patch so I don't have to use the CD...

This is a well-known bug in HL. It can happen on ALL elevators and lifts. Usually just the elevators, though. The best way to avoid it is this:

1. Immediately before entering an elevator, save the game.
2. Enter elevator. As it starts moving, continually jump up and down so as to not "stick to the floor" and start taking damage.

This works for me 99% of the time. HL/Opfor are still two of my favs to play. Granted I can breeze through them, but they are big fun. Good luck.
