Half-Life/Counter-Strike problem -- cannot connect to ANY servers!!

Ok, here's what's going on. I can connect to the main servers and download the game server list. Since it's amazingly long, I hit Cancel to cut it short and attempt to pick out a server to play on. However, when I try that, I cannot connect to ANY server -- NONE! They just time out. When I attempt to Refresh or re-do the Update, I receive no response from the master servers. When I exit out of Counter-Strike and attempt to reboot, I receive a Windows error which gives me a BSOD. EVERY TIME.

Ahhhhh!!!!!! Pissing me off.

Any ideas? I have JUST done a clean reinstall of Win98SE, updated the drivers for sound and video as well as the Win98 updates, have IE 5.01 installed and DirectX 8.0a, and just finished installing the latest BIOS update to my motherboard. I did the Windows reinstall in the hopes of fixing this problem, which was present on my previous installation.

WTF is going on??? Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

can other games like UT or quake connect? if so, its probably counterstrike.

Damn double posts!

Might as well make good out of the wasted space...did you install the video card drivers properly...cuz my ME crashes when i use the detonator drivers...but when i use nVidia's official drivers it works fine. On 2k however, detonators work fine.

I'm using a Radeon, installed latest certified drivers. I've had various video drivers installed -- doesn't appear to affect it any way.

CS files are updated to 1.1b or something like that.

The other online game I play, Day of Defeat, is also a Half-Life mod and doesn't exhibit the problem to the same degree, but it has happened a few times (haven't installed on latest Windows install though).

I have this "Can't get WoN authentication" problem. F'in pisses me off. Can't get it fixed no matter what.

Can you connect to other Halflife servers? I can connect to TFC, Valve, and DOD games through Gamespy, but not Counterstrike. Weirdest dang thing. A friend of mine has the same problem. Does anyone else have a similar problem or know how to fix it? Does it have anything to do with that anti-cheat program. Some servers give some error message saying it needs to be loaded (forgot the name of it...)

If i were you, i would try deleting the FAVSVRS.DAT file. It is stored in the C:\SIERRA\Half-Life directory. This is the file which stores all the servers you receive upon updating your in game browser. After deleting that file, you lose all your marked favorites, but typically has relieved any and all problems i've had with connecting to servers. After you delete it, start the game, and your servers list will be empty. Click update, and let it run through completely. It will generate a new full FAVSVRS.DAT file. Give it a try, its worth a shot
