Update 2: Half-Life 2 is out today on Steam for Mac!

Hurray!

----------------------------------------------------

Update: Steam for Mac on May 12th

SWEET! I can't wait!

----------------------------------------------------

Oh please oh please oh please

I played through the original half-life at least 3-4 times. I played counter-strike for hours on end. I've played through half-life 2 5 times now.

Most of the run-throughs were on windows machines, but I haven't had one for years now. As a result, I haven't played portal, episode 1, episode 2, nor the l4d series. I really want to but don't find the parallels/emulator/whatever experience fulfilling.

I can't wait until this stuff comes out for mac so I can play it on my hackintosh. I hope a 7900GS will play everything fine.

Have you tried any of the OS X WINE ports? I've installed and played Source engine games via Steam in Linux via WINE and it worked pretty well.

This would be amazing! I love these games..

I have tried WINE via CrossoverGames, and it's not too bad, but it is buggy. They don't always work, and crash pretty frequently.

Yeah I have. I managed to play almost all the way through HL2 once with it. It did work pretty well, but there were a few things which didn't work. I'm actually pretty certain that I couldn't buy new games on it for some reason or else I would have bought the orange box.

Why not upgrade your video card a bit and dual boot your hackintosh w/ Windows? That way you don't have to hope or wait.

I've not used normal wine on OSX, however crossover games works great.
The last time I tried Crossover with Source (late last year) it still couldn't properly do TF2 in DX9 mode. And this was on a GTX 285 for crying out loud.

I typically don't care what games look like. I care that they play well. I've never had issue with playing TF2. It could be in DX8 mode, I really never checked.

So went out of your way to load OS X onto a regular windows PC, and now you are waiting for an OS X port of a game you could have been playing years ago just by booting into windows instead of OS X?

I mean, I understand the convenience of not having to dual-boot being a plus, but it all seems kinda silly to get that excited about it.

Speaking for myself, and not the OP... I'm not so much excited for HL to be coming to OS X.. but rather for Steam. This opens up the doors for a much better gaming experience in OS X games. Not to mention, this is huge if Valve licenses the Source engine for OS X. Might make it a much more viable option for other game devs. Although UE3 has a pretty strong foothold.

If I really wanted to game though, I would just dual boot Windows. This is more of a convenience for when I have 15 minutes to kill.

If I could do everything from one preferred OS, then I would be excited too.

I reboot once a month typically. My main desktop is also my plex media server for my hdtv/HT. It's also my print server and file server, and all the hard drives are hfs+. Yeah, I could go through the hassle of setting up a dual boot on my hackintosh, and yeah I could set aside several gigs of space for a new OS, and yeah I could spend the money on a new OS, and install steam, but then I'd have to reboot every time I wanted to play. I wouldn't have easy instant access to my media files, and wouldn't have easy access to my HT. And no, I don't want to run windows media center AND plex.

So yeah, I COULD be playing it right now, but I'm not willing to go through the hassle. I just want this shit to work, and a native install is what it will take for me to be happy, hence my excitement.

I believe that all Valve games are coming to OS X which, especially if I don't have to buy Half Life 2 again, kicks ass since I won't have to reboot to play Portal 2.

The larger news is that Steam is coming to OS X. Which means a better, more well known distribution channel for OS X game developers and might help to prod other devs into producing Mac ports (which usually just means bundling it in Cider) more readily. It is a bit of a big deal.

I saw the confirmation earlier today too. I'm super excited.

I know it'll run decently on my 7900GS, but what about the 9400m in my MBP?
