I haven't played half life, only UT and Quake. If I get Blue Shift will I be able to play all the mods, or is Blue Shift just like an expansion pack where you need half life? so I would have to get half life anyways?

I know you need a H-L registration key to play CS and other online mods. I would be very surprised if Blue Shift was enough to provide this functionality. If you do not have a registered copy of H-L I would take advantage of this week's price at Best Buy ($19.95 for H-L GOTY Edition, Counter-Strike, or Blue Shift, with a free copy of Gunman Chronicles) to buy one. The full game is amazing if you have not played it previously, and many times longer than Blue Shift - more gaming goodness!

Justin218:

If you're interested in HL Blue Shift for the solo play, do yourself a favor and get this:
Half-Life Generation Pack
for around $35 shipped Fed-Ex 2 Day. CompuExpert is a very reliable company.

You'll get: Half-Life "Game of the Year" Edition, Team Fortress Classic, Opposing Force, and Counter-Strike in one package. As far as I know, you need Half-Life for any mods.

Blue Shift does include the Op-For expansion, but it also has a $10 rebate if you already own Op-For. It also has code for high-definition charactor and weapons models, which will automatically update the whole HL series on your system.

The biggest complaints about Op-For and Blue Shift is that they're "too short". If you play your cards right, you can have a solid month or more of HL-series solo play alone for under $50 - then you can spend the rest of this year trying to recover from your online addiction to HL death-match, TFC, Op-For CTF, and CS.

Heh - I "upgraded" to cable just for CS . . .

Blue-Shift is extremely short. Compared to Half-Life, it took a fraction of the time to finish. Opposing Forces is much longer than Blue-Shift and comparable to Half-Life in terms of game-play.

This mainly comes from the fact that Blue-Shift was originally intended for the console, but ended up on the PC. Obviously console FPS games suck in terms of plot, gameplay and story line so Blue-Shift could have been so much better.
In all honesty you are only really getting it for the high definition pack.

I dont really like the High definition pack much. I preferred the original machine gun and the new shotgun sounds like it was made by Fisher-Price.

As for Blue Shift..well...yes it certainly is too short, I bought in last friday and had completed it by saturday lunch time. Nothing really appealed to me much in the game, the plot was awful, the characters dialogue wasnt as good as in the other games, and there werent enough action 'scenes'. I've downloaded better single player missions from the web.

thanks for the opinions, I was thinking of getting it cause I loved HL but I found even opposing force too short.

I heard the CS version that comes w/ the Generation pack isn't as good as the one you can DL from www.counter-strike.net.

Also, Gunman Chronicles is a decent game, but I've tried MP and it's not too great. The game gets kinda boring single player and I quit bout half way thru the game...

Yeah, I prefered the MP5 over the m4 (or whatever it was) in OpFor. The m4 packed a punch, but it went through ammo FAST.

Are there any new enemies in BlueShift? I didn't see any in the guide to it on PHL. My copy comes today, woohoo! Can't wait to update my beloved TFC with the HighDef pack

Homer_Simpson:

Not sure what you mean about the CS versions . . . The Gen Pack has the full retail CS release; Same one as the "stand-alone" version going for $30 in stores. If you only have a dial-up connection, a 70 Mb download is a real bite in the a$$ . . .

In all fairness, NO boxed product includes the current version of CS (v1.1), and so anyone looking to play will either have to download a large patch or get v1.1 from a shrinkwrapped CD with PC Gamer or the like.
