So, it's been 10 long years since the release of Half Life. Yesterday I randomly searched for Half Life on google and ended up reading a very nice article. I'm posting the link here for the other HL fans out there! :)

Half Life Ten Years Later (from Gamespy):

I remember being in college when I played this awesome game, I had a PIII system then with a meager 64MB RAM!

Indeed, good article. I myself first played Half-Life on the PlayStation 2 version which also featured an extra episode, Half-Life: Decay. I of course heard of it before, I even still own to this day a PC Gamer issue of October 1998, in good condition might I add, with a preview of the game I believe. I bought that magazine simply because even back then when I didn't own a PC I was still reading about the games on that platform, but back then PC's were too expensive for me and I didn't have a job, I was still in high-school.

But anyway, I bought it for the PS2 and I was absolutely floored by it, I couldn't believe what I had missed during all those years, and then I understood just where the genre would be most comfortable on, PC's, from which it originated (by the way the PS2 port was amazingly well done now that I can see how it is today on PC, there's absolutely no difference outside of the high-definition models). And to this day, in terms of story-driven FPS only Half-Life Episodes can compete with the original Half-Life, not even Half-Life 2 can do it (I mean the main Half-Life 2, not the Episodes), in my opinion at least.

And for me 1998 was truly a great gaming year, I think I bought around a dozen games for all my Consoles (N64/PS/Saturn), including Xenogears, Metal Gear Solid, Grand Turismo, C&C Red Alert: Retaliation, Diablo, Turok 2, Ocarina of Time, Banjo-Kazooie, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter... and a few others.

Cool! You still have the 1998 PC Gamer issue! Is there a place online I could read it, since I don't have a copy. Initially when I played the game, I was really impressed with the AI, I mean the enemy would actually make me use cover when I thought I could just probably run and shoot my way through easily. The shootouts were also fast which made it more exciting. I still love the intro sequence in Half Life, I don't really remember any other game has had me glued to the intro then this old classic. :)

haha...I feel the same way. Add StarCraft and FF7 to the list. I owned a Saturn, PS, and PC at the time.

Half Life was revolutionary for the time but it hasn't stood up very well. I played it the other day and it did not live up to my nostalgia. It just shows how much first person shooters have evolved over the last 10 years.

Played the same month as release on a P2 450Mhz, 256MB RAM, Riva TNT system. Absolutely top of the line for the time period. Rocked.

I'm not going to agree. As a matter of fact I installed the good old game once again on my HD and started playing it and it's actually been better then most other FPS games I've played (and that's quite a lot). What still amazes me in Half Life is the smooth flow of the game. Sure I hate the jumping puzzles, the dated graphics, but when I've got brilliant AI functioning on greater difficulty levels I'm not complaining. :)

HL and Unreal were the first games I played after building my first gaming system in the spring of 1999. It was an AMD K2-350mhz system with 128mb of RAM and a Voodoo Banshee. That was fun times.

Hmmm.....I played it on a Cyrix 133 mhz, 24 mb of ram and one super Trident video card with 1 mb. At 320x200 and it still totally rocked. ;)

Me too; as much as I love good gameplay, I simply cannot stand blocky 3D graphics. I'm perfectly alright with crappy 2D graphics, but once you jump to 3D, it starts to look very very bad. I'm also saving my HL2 adventure for this, too... when it's finally done, I'll look forward to playing it, then moving on to Fakefactory's HL2 mod... should be awesome.

Damn, just beat half-life. Now, I appreciate Half-Life 2 and both episodes a lot more!

Imo the graphics for HL1 are still fine. I play it every few years or so, last I played it through was about 2 years ago. Great and fun game....I like how you move so fluidly. My favorite parts were when I came onto an existing battle~ HL2 did that a lot more which I appreciated. It fleshes out the atmosphere a lot better because it doesn't give the impression that things only happen when you are around.
