I did a playthrough including the episodes a few months back. It has aged incredibly well.

No stronger flex on Steam than 2003-2004 join dates.

Also on a playthrough kick the past several months. Still a ton of fun to play, and nice to revisit with lore appropriate HD Texture mods that I couldn’t even imagine using back when I first started playing Half Life 2 with my GeForce 4 MX420 (and proceeded with low power, budget GPUs until finally being bale to afford high end rigs of my own in 2017… followed by GPU prices exploding making me continue riding out what I got) :)

Ran it on an older PC since I am working on my main rig right now... although my new 5900X with my 3080 probably won't do much better than this old heap of junk...
3840x2160, Maxed settings (Motion Vomit turned off) R9 290, 3600X = 222.05fps

1280x1024 with the same system and config = 294.19fps, some sweet scaling to 4K...

It must have a frame rate limiter.

1080p max settings- 5700G using Vega 8 IGP at 2300MHz w/3600MHz CL18

Same settings; I had to check box "use bloom when available" again for some reason. This time with the same system using a 2060 Super. Scored lower than IGP = lulz!lost coast 2060 super.jpg

I think the frame limiter in this case is the single threaded CPU performance...
I am dubious. Unless he has a great overclock on that 3600x it should not be getting the same score as a 5700g boosting to 4.8GHz. And all of our scores are so close regardless of res, with the exception of the 290 at 4K where it appears GPU bound. Or am I missing something as usual? I am definitely doing a hard TBI brain fog lately, along with the headaches.

It is a stock 3600X paired with 32GB 3600MHz CL14 RAM, the CPU can do 4.6GHz all core but it is no longer under water cooling so I reset to stock settings. The 290 in question is a Powercolor PCS+ running at 1200/1500 (1040/1350 stock), it is GPU limited except when entering the fort when GPU load drops to ~70% for a few seconds along with a FPS drop before shooting back up.

Did Lost Coast get all the Source updates as they were released in the Episodes? I remember it got upgraded with bloom lighting,but don't recall if they ever added volumetric fog and soft shadows etc...

afaik lost coast is still in a older build of the engine compared to episode 2 and such;

I've played half life 2 originally with a Geforce 2 MX 400, Athlon XP and 512MB of ram... feels like a lifetime ago...

268.9 fps on my 2012 low to midrange PC (HD 7850, i5 2310)
with default settings but res changed to 1680x1050

Half life 2 engine has a 300 fps cap by default. I'm pretty sure there's a way to increase the limit but I don't remember off the top of my head.

Did another older PC to see if it is also seemingly random... and it is.

4770K @ 4.6GHz, 16GB 2400MHz CL10, ASUS 7870 DirectCU II (1100/1300).
1280x1024 = 294.15fps
1920x1080 = 280.35fps
3840x2160 = 287.63fps

Tempted to try a 5850, 5750, 8800GTX, 7800GT but we'll see if I have the time & can be bothered to get them out of storage.

I’ve still got my free HL2 Steam Key card that came with my 9600XT in 2004.

Ever wonder why there were so many explosive barrels in HL2?
