I've waited a long time for this game to come out, and now I think that my 3 years old system may not be able to play it. Can someone give me an idea of how it will play and what it will look like with this my system:
P4 1.5
Geforce ti4200 128 mb
760 mb rd ram

Thanks,

The only thing I'd be worried about is the P4 @ 1.5ghz. From what I've read, the game actually runs decent on the GF4 Ti series of cards.

You've probably read this in the video forum, but theres a patch for DX8 cards like the ti4200s that give DX9 quality water effects and such with only a slight hit on framerate

What kind of frame rates did you get, WannaFly? I'm thinking about getting HL2 for my 1.5Ghz Sempron with o/c ti4200 and 512MB RAM - near enough the same spec as yours. How does it fair on 800x600 too?

I tried running Doom3 on this system:

P4 2.4Ghz 533 bus
512 MB
GF4 420MX <-- the glorified GF2

Marginally playable with NOTHING turned on. What should I expect with a 5-6 generation old video card?!? :):disgust:

You should try getting 2 voodoo2 SLI cards, Pak, there's a patch to make Doom3 run on those cards without any fancy lighting and ultra low quality textures at roughly 40fps.
HL2 is supposed to be playable on lower end cards. It was nice of them to think of us poor people.

the 4200 will play it fine, it did for me @ 10*7 with no AA or AF. I had a 2500 barton CPU though.

i'd ran perfectly on my p4 1.8 and 9200 with 800x600 medium settings. no glitching whatsoever.

edit: oh and 512 megs of ram.

I got the demo thinking it would run really bad on my current system
P4 1.5
512 sd ram
geforce 2/mx

The game ran fine on it. 8x6 res and medium settings. I would think that if you have a ti4200 you would be prefectly fine

I just played the HL2 demo last night on my system.
AXP 1700+
GF3 Ti200
512MB PC 2100

It automatically set the graphics to 800x600 with most detail settings on medium or high, but no AA or AF.
It ran pretty smooth and actually looked remarkably good even at 800x600.

I found the game rather boring though. At least the demo levels. It was pretty much just shoot some monsters, go into the next area, and repeat. I dont' know, maybe I'm just bored of the standard FPS gameplay.

The problem is, how else is an FPS going to be played? I suggest balancing your game time between RPG's, RTS's, and FPS's. You seem to be lacking in vitamin RPG!

Correct me if I am wrong in any way, But last time i checked when HL2 was in devlonment Gabe Newall of Valve said Minimum Requirements are
[*]256mb System Ram
[*]Pentium III 733mhz
[*]Direct X 7 Video Card
[*]2 Gigabytes of Free Hard Drive space

Doom3 Playes fine on my older system it has:
[*]1.4ghz Tualtin Pentium III (faster than 1.4-1.5 P4 Williamette, and is the base of todays Pentium M)
[*]Dircet X 9 Ati/Crucial 9700pro 128mb
[*]One Stick of 512mb CAS2 PC150 (PC133 Micron Chips) 1.1GB/s Bandwith
[*]I Can get 100-185 FPS in Battlefield Vietnam @1024x768
[*]HL2 Works on my system.
[*]Doom3 works on my system.

your cpu is ick. card probably ok for low settings though. runs dx8 path i believe. i have a similar card, radeon 9000pro (overclocked). rather sh*tty. but my cpu is a 2.2ghz mobile barton..so atleast that doesn't limit me. 1024x768+ all lowest graphics settings works.

Very true. Like I said, it's probably not HL2, it's just the formula that I'm bored of. But FPS's are the only type of game I've ever really played. Quake 2 > Rogue Spear > CS > MoH > BF 1942 > CoD. I generally prefer team based online play, although I did find the single player missions in MoH and CoD to be a lot of fun.

I've tried to get into some RPG type games but couldn't.

Dont Forget that MHz For MHz Tualtin P3 (aka Pentium M without sse2) is faster than p4 for the same reasons AMD Athlon XP and Athlon 64 are faster than P4. So its not that bad. Battlefield Vietnam 1024x768 Medium or Default Settings 115-180 FPS. Max Settings@1024x768 45-90 FPS in BFV.

Try Savage, it was pretty different for an FPS. RTS and RPG elements in an FPS. Worked pretty well as long as you have a good commander.
