Awhile ago I read Sept 30 as a release date -- is this sucker out or did it get pushed back? Has Valve given an official release date or it's still open to speculation?

Scheduled for "holiday release". Which holiday (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year) is anyones guess. I'm guessing the leaked source code isn't going to help. :(

Well if the 11/28 date is right that's 2 months late and at this point I think any supposed release dates are nothing but guesses. I've seen others post different release dates and they all can't be right.

On one side I think they need to get it out ASAP so it's not released next to the other huge game (Doom3). On the other hand I wonder if they're waiting on the release for graphics cards to catch up (either hardware or driver tweaks). I just hope Call of Duty is released ontime (late Nov) so we have something to play soon.

COD is supposed to be early NOV 4. I hope they stick to it. Nothing else worth waiting on now.

Holiday is generally the time of and leading up to Christmas and New Years. I'd say december.

Cool! I thought I read late Nov somewhere. Hope it arrives early Nov then.

As far as the holiday season comments, I was just being sarcastic. I know they're not counting Halloween or Thanksgiving. Well, I could see them launching it the day after Thanksgiving as it's the big shopping day. ;) Still, I think they mean around Christmas and probably not even then. :(

I don't fully understand why having code stolen would affect the release date so much. What is it that they've got to do now that it's been stolen that's going to take them 6 months?

yeah. People act like this is an OS. its a stupid game. sho cares if hackers have some of the source code.

Now I wont buy it, im sick of game delays. They shouldnt anounce a release date until its gold.

I agree. This pisses me off something awful. Why don't they just launch the damn game in the next two months and keep patching it up the wazoo, like every other PC game out there. That way we can play the bloody single player before it gets old.

Besides, there will still be client-side hack protection, and clients will still be able to ban hackers from their games. Every other online PC game has some hacks, do they think they can actually make it totally hack free?

From PC Gamer forum

LoL, well, basically it says that two guys from Halflifesource.com spent the afternoon at Valve, talking with Gabe and Greg. According to the guys from Halflifesource, Newell said (not directly, though, I think) that only a small part of the code was stolen. This info, while not set in stone, would mean that the leak won't delay the game any further.

I am not responsible for this text (except translation), it was copied from a forum, and from halflife.nu.

From the artile

VUE says that crackers scooped up a third of the code of Half Life 2, making it "almost impossible" for bootleggers to exploit the leak.

And how do they know that it was poor white people who stole the code, hmm? ;) :p

BTW, this story has been picked up by the mainstream news -- it's on the front page of www.cnn.com today.

The number being floated around is around 1/3 of the source. Now, this is not as clear-cut as it might seem -- it sounds like they got source for the final game (as opposed to one of the demo versions), but I don't know if they got single-player, multi-player, or some combination of the two. Another critical distinction would be whether or not they got a random selection of files, or, say, all the client-server networking code (which would necessitate a ton of rewriting to prevent online cheats from appearing as soon as the game hit the street).

Either they're using this as an excuse to cover the game not being ready, or the hackers got their hands on code containing information that Valve thinks can greatly disrupt the multiplayer aspects of the game. I'm not entirely certain why they can't release the SP now and patch in the MP later if they're concerned about it, though...
