ok, thanx a lot for replying.
PS - how would Half-Life 2 and CS source do on my computer?

It should be fine.
I run it on my 9800pro and an athlon 64 3500+ with decent frame rates.

dont try to DL those games from steam with 56k though 🙁
there updates will take long enough for you

make sure you learn to us offline mode properly so you can play HL2

damn guys, give the guy a break. My friend is a straight up computer power user, but he still uses dial-up, just finds it better than 30-50 bucks a month.

Do not go together.

yeah really. Seriously you can use dial up for next to nothing but I'd asume pay $30-$50 and use the internet the way its suppose to be used. If I ever had to go back to 56k I wouldn't be online anymore.

SupraTran that system will run HL2 great at anything lower than 1280x1024 high detail no FSAA. Also I think Valve will send out a CD with the game on it for ppl on dial up. Seems like I read it on their site somewhere.

A multi-gig download on 56K? Wow. And for the record, Counter Strike wont be all that great without broadband. It'll run fine, but the essence of CS is online play.

very true CSS would suck.... I have tried playing Vs bots and it was OK but not real great. HL2 on the other hand is still a SWEET game.

yea your rig will dominate hl2 but cs will blow on 56k im positive (once you get it all dl'ed of course)

and i can see being a power user on dialup if you dont do any gaming. but once gaming comes into play, especially fps games, broadband has become a necessity nowadays, i think

DO NOT try and download all of HL2 on a 56k. Don't even bother. The game was like 5 CDs...so you're going to be trying to pull about 3 gigs down. HL3 will be out by the time the download finishes.

There should be a standalone distributable package that you can download and then use to install the game. I recommend you go to your friend with broadbands house, or download it from school or something and burn it to CD. It'll probably take you a while just to download the updates.

pfft the game is definatly worth the download even if it does take a few days, Its excellent. Don't listen to the people who say don't bother. But yeah make sure you use offline mode or else whenever they update and you want to play you'll get screwed into trying to dl it.

That would literally take a week to download without interruptions. God forbid if you have to re-download it too.

Have you ever even used a 56k modem? Downloading 100MB is a nightmare. We're talking 3 gigs. He needs to download the content files somewhere else and burn them to CD. Its just not reasonable to bother trying to download that.

I have a question for anyone who wants to try. I bought HL2 from frys for $25. It wont load past disc 2. It is the asia pacific version, if that matters. It did load steam however. Now, im not sure if frys will exchange for the same title, but im going to try. My question is this. With the cd key that came with the game, can I; 1) down load the game from steam and just never have the working cds.
2) borrow a friends cds, install, and use my key.

This is all of course depending on frys not doing the exchange, which is the most desireable.

The CD's are pretty much just a Steam backup so your key should work with another disc.

Thanks for the reply. I have friends to borrow from, but I would really rather have the game myself. With the key, can I get it directly from steam? Just a question.

Can't you backup the Steam download to a DVD? I have the retail 5 CD version, so I don't exactly know what I'm talking about.

I have the DVD version. On the disc are several 1 gig files.
I dont know if you can just copy all 5 CD's to a DVD and run the install.
Might be worth a try.
