Half Life 2 US PC Gamer Review

Wonderful, now when the hell is the game going gold? Sporting mahogany after every positive review is only going to give me blue balls for when the game actually comes out. Enough of the cock tease and release the damn game already.
 
im gonna wait till gamers get a go at this and post their own reviews. all gaming mags hailed doom3 as the best game ever also. but i heard from a lot of gamers later on that gameplay get boring and repetitive after a while with doom3

Well the 3 online reviews I read had it in the 80's. PC Gamer's was the highest review I saw for doom 3. I guess we'll have to wait and see what the same 3 online sites give half life 2, but I can say for sure they gave far cry higher marks.

Here I am stuck with an ATI coupon code for HL2...with only an AGING P4 2.0B Northwood system (400mhz FSB, Single-Channel DDR2100) with a 9600XT videocard to play it on. I think I'll be playing it at 640x480 until I build a new rig sometime in Q1 2005.
 
CS Source is incredible. Office looks the best so far, the colors and the detail really show off the Source engine.

Only beef is that they have not included cs_assualt and militia..

In high quality, 4aa 8af 1280 I get some drops in the mid to low 30's especially on servers with 30+ players. Occasionally, will see some sub 20fps in a massive firefight..

I was expecting better performance and am not ready to lower my AA settings since this is a a game that almost requires good AA. I am running the latest beta drivers, 66.81 which are kinda buggy. Will revert back to the 65.xx series to see if it improves performance and will use the driver optimizations later tonight...

I've been playing it in 800x600 pretty much all medium settings (shadows made a big difference after I turned them off) and running without a problem and it still looks great on my Athlonxp 2000+, 512 pc2700, G4 4200 64 meg version. Was a little clicky when shadows were higher detail. Steam scans your hardware and gives you recommended settings. Strange thing was I ran the diagnostic video test that comes with it and I got 60 fps. But ingame with recommended settings I only got 30 or so and I'd drop frames here and there (although that could have been lag).

DAMN! Militia is my favourite map. I played Source briefly yesterday, and yeah, office was awesome. I ran around shooting random stuff just to see what happened and got my ass kicked pretty badly. The bullet holes in those metal file cabinets are the best.
