15:20 During our recent Access All Areas tour of Valve Software's US offices, we uncovered some white-hot Half-Life 2 news that's more exciting than Stacey Keibler calling us up and offering to do a naked centrefold.
Valve has already confirmed that Half-Life 2 is coming to Xbox, right? And Newell confirmed it's well up-and-running, too. "We have it running on Xbox right now, but a decision on how and when we'll release it is reliant on our ongoing conversations with Microsoft," Valve's managing director said to our sister print publication CVG magazine.

But how will it compare to its PC cousin? Well, according to Gabe, the Xbox version will be identical to the PC one, only slightly inferior in the graphics department. So imagine the best looking PC game from 12 months ago - say Unreal II - and you'll be pretty close to how it'll look. In other words, it's still going to be one of if not the best looking Xbox title
ever.

Better still, all of the PC version's facial animation, physics and musculature systems will be in there, too!

It's also guaranteed to run more smoothly than a Porsche on rails, no matter how many aliens cram onto your TV. How? By fractionally reducing the detail level of each creature, so the mayhem continues uninterrupted. Sweet. As yet there's no release date, with the PC version shipping first. But one thing's for sure - Xbox ain't that far behind.

The way they word it in the article it seems like the game is complete and they are just waiting for the paperwork to sell it. It should be a great game.

*Waiting for XBox haters to say how can a GF2 can run a graphics intensive game like HL2*

I'm glad I own a XBox - 3 bad ass FPS' in half a year - Doom 3, Halo 2, and HL2 :) If The Chronicles of Riddick had multiplayer I'd add that in too, b/c that's supposedly very good.

Meh... FPS sucks on game consoles. Lack of mouse + keyboard control = crap. And yes, I know the aftermarket keyboards/mouses you can buy for PS2/XBox, but still they suck.

graphics-intensive in 640? Lol...

Is it fun playing an FPS where it takes 10 seconds to turn around? :p Oh, and last I heard d3 and hl2 were scheduled for pc releases too, and that includes non-laughable resolutions ^_^

I agree. I just don't know about Riddick. The movie just looks so f*ckin stupid that I could never justify buying the game.

Tell us how you really feel about FPS on gaming consoles and accessories for them... :)

And that also includes buying a new video card and having a PC that can handle it. Xbox is $150, how much is a video card and PC that would give me "non-laughable resolutions"? Not to mention a monitor that would make these games look good. Aaaahhh, just to much work.

10x7 is on the low side, but beats the snot out of 640. My ti4600 does Far Cry in it np, with all settings on very high to boot. It should do as well or better in HL2. You can find them for ~$50. What does a monitor have to do with it? If you're posting here, you very likely already have a computer capable of it anyway. Why would you need to buy a new video card, processer, and monitor?

I just hope the PC version doesn't wind up being a half-assed port of the XBox version, like what happened with Deus Ex: Invisible War. Of course this is HL2, poised to be the engine of basis for hundreds of mods in the coming years, but I always worry now when I see "on XBox and PC".

You guys must have forgotten just how much fun Goldeneye was.

Hey, I'm an avid PC gamer but have no problem playing fps's on consoles either. Maybe I've just got the skills to do well on both. :p

Yeah, but I have a big HDTV in the living room with surround sound. Why would I want to play on a 17" monitor? And my PC at home is P3 733mhz with a 32mb video card. I don't know if that will run it, but if it does probably not so well. For ME it just makes sense to buy the game for xbox.

And for the majority of the world too I'd say. The amount it would cost you to upgrade that computer to be able to run HL2 at an acceptable level isn't pretty, and upgrading a PC for one game is stupid.

I PAID $1000 to play HL2!!11!!!1

640 x 480 is plenty of resolution.
Make the game look nice has a lot more to do with the texture detail, lighting, FPS, animation quality etc.
I run games on a 21" monitor, and 640 x 480 resolution, even on a large monitor, is never the the least common denominator of the graphic quality of the game.

I'll concede that resolution isn't everything; for example I can play Far Cry in 12x10 with medium settings, but choose 10x7 with very high... but 640x480 is really pushing it. There's only so much detail available in 640 and AA can only go so far. Anyway, although you can output PCs to HDTV (and it's becoming easier & cheaper to do so), I'd agree you might not want to build a rig just for HL2. Where are you getting $1000 from though, Fing? You could build a rig for ~$400 that would be capable of titles like Far Cry, HL2 and Doom3. Not in their highest settings, but it would utterly destroy consoles.

Sounds like it's good to go to me. Is there some conspiracy I don't know about?

Heh, some people are just irritated because of all of the delays. I personally believe it.

Ill believe it when I see it when it comes to HL2.

I also agree with everyone else who supports computer games over console games. For all you CS fans it wouldnt have happened if it was a console game. It takes a computer to mod! :)

And for the person who was asking what graphics card hed need to play the same game on a computer, I say this. Why not just use a GF3. Most likely you already have something equal to or better than one and a processor that is better than a hexbox proc as well!

Yeah, it seems like the only two arguments console fans have is that you need a $400 card to play new pc titles, which of course is utter BS; I haven't met a game yet my 4600 couldn't handle in what I consider acceptable resolution/settings/framerate (much higher than consoles, I'll tell you that). - and game availability. This I'll agree with; it's really the only conceivable reason to buy one of these things, and it's unfortunate that so many game makers, for whatever rea$on$ *cough*, choose not to make their titles available on the PC :disgust:

Not to knock on yea, RB. But if I recall correctly the Xbox has the video rendering device equivelant to an overclocked GF4 Ti4600. (...if thats what you were inferring about the GF2 comment)

No way in hell, if you up the reso for HDTV it gets choppy on most any 3d title - even fans admit this.

Another reason I would give is I like to play games with friends. And I don't want to have 4 PCs right next to eachother networked together. Or play these people online. I like to have friends sit right next to me and play. Also, how am I going to play a PC game in my living room sitting on my couch? With the keyboard and mouse on the coffee table? Nah, I'm not saying that PC gaming is crap or anti-social, it's just not for me.
