Two reasons why this post is daft.
1)HL2 is in ATIs booth at E3.
2)This quote from planet halflife.
While the new engine has all sorts of fancy features, it's still designed to scale and work on lower-end machines. Apparently a 700mhz processor and a video card capable of running DX6 is enough, although a 2ghz with a GeForce4 is recommended. Rumors about NVidia or ATI exclusivity are unfounded.

I'll bet nVidia are readying those static clip planes right now. :p

Or to put it another way, it's simply not gonna happen.

Plus, how are they going to make it NV only? Majority of user still have GF4 or lower cards, and unless I am mistaken, they support standard Direct X stuff.

FX does have some unqiue stuff, but there won't be a large enough market for an exclusive games.

Unless NVidia is putting up $50 Mil for the developers, there is no way they would do this.

The link you provided is saying that their source is Insider from NV.

Bahh, didn't we have enough "info" from NV already.
Intel? Are you joking?

Yeah really; didn't Intel make one videochip, the i740, and then leave the market?

I went to ATi's page once looking for new drivers, and I saw that start page with Gordon and that other woman (can't remember her name; heck, I can't remember people's names in the real world either!) and I thought of this thread right away. Maybe ATi just likes endorsing competitor's products. Or maybe HL2 will support more than nVidia cards.;)

There may be some truth to this, as it might be a "The way it's meant to be played" game, ala UT2K3, but that does not make it an Nvidia exclusive. FUD this is, but not much more.

The tech and ingame demos running at E3 were on Radeon 9800 Pro's. The guy doing the tech demo mentions this.

The I740 was their only stand alone graphics card, but they've had numerous dirivatives thereof. Most noteably the I752 graphics chip.

Intel does indeed hold a very substantial market share, however they do not hold dominance by any means.
I don't care to look up the exact figures right now, but Intel has the second largest market share behind only nVidia... with ATi running a semi-close third.

In any case, even Intel's highest performance integrated graphics products would likely be pushed to their limits to pull off 40FPS or so at 640x480x16bpp with average details.

while that should be enough for many casual gamers it certainly won't be adequate for consistent gamers let alone the enthusiast segment.

Intel has the largest share of "integrated graphics chips" not video cards.

hehe, yeah considering ALOT of those junky PCs sold at retail places (i.e. Best Buy, CompUSSR, Circuit City) are mostly integrated crap (810, 740s). Even the higher-end spec machines are GF4 MX440 and I've rarely seen machines with Radeon 9xxxx and Ti4xxx. So, I'm not surprised that Intel eats up the largest market share.

About the claim, that is the lamest boast I've ever heard. There is NO WAY that Valve would even dare making the game a video-card exclusive game. It's one of those stupid marketing crap trying to "misinform" Average Joe into buying a nVidia card.

Do yourself a favor and check the date of the original post.

why was this thread resurrected? and to answer the question stated, Intel does indeed currently have the largest marketshare of video cards, as they integrate a video core with basically every board they make and the integrated video is sufficient for the vast majority of businesses that buy the systems.

Then kindly please explain to me this: http://www.ati.com/shopati/promotions/halflife2.html

Let me quote: "Half-Life® 2 is optimized to run on the hardware of ATI?s newest Direct X 9.0 graphics RADEON? 9800 series of cards."

Well, especially considering ATI was using Half Life 2 at E3 TO DEMO their 9800 Pro, I would say it is one big load of bullcrap.

That has to be the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. This is horsesh!t, this better not happen because this is my first ATI card and I don't want it to be a bad experience. The gaming industry is slowly becoming homosexual.

and your point being?

He would seem to imply that the gaming industry is of a particular gender, which gender that might be I'm unsure. Evidentely the industry was once heterosexual and is now slowly gravitating towards homosexuality or bisexuality.

Perhaps the gaming industry is attracted to other industries?
I've no idea, as I was unaware that a group of related companies dedicated towards a particular market could be designated as having a particular gender.

Key word there: it might be. Nvidia has been on a signup spree lately for TWIMTBP games, so it's likely they've been at least trying to get HL2 on that list.

This is one of the reasons that I have boycotted Electronic Arts. I hate that company.
