World Exclusive: Half-Life 2 to be nVidia-only game 2nd Apr 2003

Insiders suggest exclusivity deal.

We can reveal that Valve is currently looking at making its massively anticipated FPS sequel Half-Life 2 exclusive to nVidia graphics cards, in what will be the first deal of its kind in the PC gaming sector.

This massive story comes from insiders at nVidia, who are boasting that this will be the first of many such deals for exclusive content, bespoke to its cards.

We have been aware for some time that both ATi and nVidia have been courting the publishers and developers of AAA PC games, trying to gain card-exclusivity.

?You will see a massive change in the structure of the PC games industry in the next few months, with the first batch of announcements hitting at E3,? one insider told us. ?Instead of being referred to as PC gaming, you will become an nVidia or ATi gamer, as distinct as Sony and Nintendo.?

This concept has been circulating for some time, with gossip about graphics cards overshadowing next-gen console talk at the recent Game Developer?s Conference.

Remember where you read this first, and expect confirmation at this May?s E3.

I can see Chizow drooling at the possibility from here!

Yeah, lets halve our user base, great idea(!).
nVidia only means no SIS/Intel integrated graphics, no ATi, no Matrox etc.
It would outrage a lot of people and limit the number of consumers who could buy the game.

Not only would it be stupid, it would be virtually impossible to do. And even if they found a way, someone would make a work around.

GTaudiophile; have you ever heard of April Fool's Day? If you believed that, you win the fool of '03 award...

One insider? If this was real, they'd give someone's name, I'd imagine. Even if it were true, there'd be a work around, probably before the game even came out.

That would be like shooting yourself in the foot while hanging yourself then falling into a pit of rabid wookies.

For some people April Fool's doesn't last a day, it runs from April 1 to April 1 the next year perpetually ad infinitum. And yes, he's had a MS-esque monopoly on FOY for as long as I've been reading these forums.

As for "drooling" over the news, I could care less. I'll just have to buy an nVidia card or use one of my GF3's in a dual-boot rig. On the other hand, vendor specific games would only worsen the situation for your obsolete R7500.

Glad you just bought a Dx8 that will NOT run any Dx9 games? :D I seriously doubt this would be true, even if they did. I am positive someone would release some Nvidiot-hacked drivers :D

Could it be because Halflife 2 is coming out for XBox only, and thus an nVidia-only game? That's the rumour I've heard, check actiontrip I think.

This thing will never pass. Valve will suffer a huge loss in game sales because they would be alienating half their selling base.

Thats stupid. If they do that they better start making mobos that have 2 agp slots so I can have both... if not then ATI all the way for me...

Even if they did, I'm sure people will hack it up to make it compatible with ATI and other cards.

It has to be coded in OpenGL and Direct3D, its not like the PC is a console in its own propriety (but even they can be ported).

if halflife 2 suffers from the same graphics that counterstrike/halflife suffered from then i won't be buying it anyway.
i own a pny ti4200 but i prefer the ati 9700 pro graphics more.

It would suck if it is, but I'd pass on it if I don't have a NVidia card. I certainly wouldn't let the exclusivity be the deciding factor on what vidcard to get, unless everything else was equal.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if it's a poor attempt at an April Fools joke as there's absolutely no way that it could be true.

It will never happen.

PC games, as they are now, sell very few copies. Publishers/Developers are always dropping like flies.

Making a game exclusive to "videocard x" would cut their sales even more.
