No offense, but why would you have your source code on a machine with Outlook and hooked up to the Internet?
that'll teach him...to best security starts at the physical location of the box. You'd think that something as important as the source code of HL2 would be protected just a bit better.
"4) Around 9/19 someone made a copy of the HL-2 source tree."
hmmmm...should that have been some cause of concern then?
"5) At some point, keystroke recorders got installed on several machines at Valve. Our speculation is that these were done via a buffer overflow in Outlook's preview pane. This recorder is apparently a customized version of RemoteAnywhere created to infect Valve (at least it hasn't been seen anywhere else, and isn't detected by normal virus scanning tools)."
maybe Gabe's not aware of the fact that using that silly preview pain in outlook is like keeping your front door open
"If you have information about the denial of service attacks or the infiltration of our network,"
don't these people run some sort of firewall that will log these attacks? for god's sake a 50.00 linux box could do that job
I don't mean to piss on anyones parade here, but I think if I'm working on the code for the most anticipated game in the last four years Id be just a bit more careful with my workstation, email, and networks.
I certainly hope they catch this a$$wipe and through the book at him, and I also hope that they have learned their lesson. To top it off, we'll probably have to wait even longer now, AND that vile breed of cheaters will already be a step ahead...
