I'm looking forward to HL2. The first one was very good (at least the first 4/5 of it before it bombed out at the end). Hopefully we won't see any jumping puzzles in this one.

Dues Ex was a better game than HL. The performance problems combined with a more limited appeal hurt it yet it still earned a large fanbase. HL had a more limited "run around and shoot things" design and I expect HL2 to be the same. No big deal, both games will be fun.

I just hope they're not out until about spring of 2004 when I upgrade next. 🙂

I've played MOHAA as well. Its a good game, but in a different way. It was more "mission based". Different kind of game than HL and RTCW. I can't think of the right words to describe what I mean. All I have been playing lately is BF1942. The DC mod is pretty cool.

ya, also the ai is as dumb as rocks. if you get low on heath all you have to do is hide and shoot your gun while the enimies run around the corner into your fire. that is not a good videogame in my book.

It would actually be a surprise if the gameplay matched the original, as is (EDIT) NOT often the case with sophomore efforts. Some work (Warcraft2, Fallout2, Doom2, Diablo2), but these were from developers that have proven to be tried and true.

id wasn't proven prior to DooM2 either 🙂

What else has Valve done sides the exquisite half-life and all its incarnations?

And that is really the point. Everything they have done has been utterly exceptional. If they fail with HL2 they will be roasted of course, but as of right now their record is as close to perfect as anyone's. It also has been in development silently for years, that a developer has that type of faith in their work that they don't find the need to try and build hype speaks well on its likely direction. It may not end up being the best game ever, but what are the odds that it won't be great? I'd wager heavily that HL2 will turn out to be a much better game then DooM3.

Exactly, I'm thinking it will be great, and am looking forward to it more than any other game. It'll all come down to what it is actually like, which nobody knows, but I'm amazed that Valve managed to keep things so quiet so long.

Does the name Castle Wolfenstein mean anything to you? How about Spear of Destiny? Id had proven themselves to gamers long before Doom ever came out.

Wow, thanks Ben!

I'm so friggin excited, I can't stand it. 😀 My favorite game of all time finally has a sequel! Ugh...Sept 30 is too far away. 🙁

I was probably one of the first in the USA to play HL. There was a leaked demo in Russia (what was later called "Day One") at least a month before it was out. It took me over 8 hrs to download it. It was only up for one day before Valve made them take it down.

I bought the full version the day it came out. Played OF and BS also.

Is it Sept yet?: clock;

HL single player certainly was badass, certainly badass enough to rerelease it a few more times and have expansions and other such addons to the series.

Castle Wolfenstein yes, I recall playing that on a Apple][ when Carmack was still in school 🙂

CW3D and SoD were not big hits in terms of critical acclaim or marketplace penetration. DooM put id on the map, D2 backed it up and Quake cemented it.

OldFart-

That's why I was saying in the other thread next month's announcements had me playing through the Black Mesa saga again 🙂 All of those screens came out of this months various PC gaming publications, I'll likely be buying all of them to make sure I don't miss any details when they hit newstands. Jamming guns, weight of the weapon impacting aiming etc, same writer back from the original, HL2 looks like its going to kick all sorts of @ss 😀

It looks sweet, but I hope it isn't as long as the original. I got about "half-life" way through it
rolleye.gif
and got bored and stopped playing. That was about 18 months ago, and now that better games are out, I have no motivation to finish it. Did I miss much on the story aspect?

Grab BF1942 then... couple hours and you'll be done with that game

That was extremely disappointing... at least it has a multi-player option.

I do have it, and your right, it is way too short. Not to mention UT 2K3, and "The Sum of All Fears." Deus Ex was long, but I still managed to get all the way through it because it stayed interesting. But those spyder robot things start to piss you off after a while....

Problem-Unreal Tournament 2003 and Battlefield 1942 are primarily multiplayer games. The campaigns in bf1942, in my opinion, are mainly to get you used to the game, and they worked for me.
