Half Life 2 review

In the last page, they say they reccommend a 2.4GHz CPU, but don't specify Intel or AMD. The assumption is Intel, I guess?

Forget what it says. Get the fastest parts you can afford to experience it the best way you can.

obviously they mean intel, stock 2.4GHz AMD CPUs aren't quite common yet, lol.

Err, right. 😱

Well, there is me and my 2.4GHz A64 (130nm S754 3000+ Newcastle @ 2.4GHz; beats 3500+ quite handily in everything). 😉
I think most of us A64 owners will be fine... as long as the video card is 9800Pro or better.

I know. 🙂 I have the 3400+ newcastle stock @2400MHz 😀

BTW I've seen the gameplay videos of HL2. Simply astonishing :Q

I bet there are about 3 million 9600XT/9800XT buyers on the edge of their seats clutching a faded coupon these days..... 😉

It definitely looks fun, I'll have to make time to knock down those last few Doom3 levels asap..

6800NU vs 6800GT HL2 benches soon.

You haven't finished Doom3 yet Rollo?!!! It finishes really quickly once you get the soul cube. Just run like hell through the levels.

Nope, I'm in DeltaLabs level 2, supposedly looking for the teleporter. I haven't been playing much for weeks, been pretty busy at other things.

Don't know if I like the idea of running through the levels though, sounds kind of like when you follow those bots "helping" them. It's a neat concept, but it's not very spooky chasing a bot while it mows down the stuff that would have jumped out at you.

I take it the Soulcube is that thing I've heard regenerates you?

It's all about the vcard in games. I'd rather have a 800xt and Duron 1.8 than a FX-53 and a 9600.

My scores varied very little between a AXP @ 2700 and a A64 @2600 in the three 3dmarks tests with only 3dmark2001 seeing anything substantial, like 15% diff.

Anyway looks cool.

OMG, it won't be released until November 23rd!! :Q
The long, drawn-out Half-Life 2 release date saga appears to be drawing to a close at long last, with Vivendi-Universal Games' expected to formally announce a November 26th release date for Europe, with US gamers getting the game three days earlier on November 23rd.
source Nothing official, though.
I can't wait to play this game.

This is "sort" of true, but you do need a fast enough cpu as well.

You're welcome Sickbeast.

Now this is my own webserver, 5gb of traffic a month, don't try to steal it all. 🙂 😛

3dmark2001 was dependant greatly on CPU memory bandwidth first, CPU mhz speed next, and GPU speed last.

AthlonXP 1700+ @ 140FSB DDR (280mem) - 12400
A64 3000+ @ 2.4ghz, 200HTT (400Mem) - 20600

With 3dmark03, less of a difference but one was there nonetheless

Axp: 5300
A64: 6200

Doom3, 1024x768 HQ with shadows and HumusTweak

Axp: 34
A64: 46

3dmark2001 is a more accurate model of games, while 3dmark03 and probably 05 also are so gpu intense that the cpu component is very small. That is one of the criticisms of 3dmark03, that it's a graphics card benchmark, not a game benchmark. I only got slightly lower scores with a celeron 2.6 than a 2.8c, but in Far Cry it about doubled my fps if not more.
