Half-Life 2 Problems

I JUST went out and bought HL2 yesterday. Installed with a breeze but when I try to play the game it comes up with some error message of "game cannot be played offline" or "Steam is not connected" I have to dial up the internet then the game begins to load.

Is this usual? Do I have to be online to play? Please help

It has to get online once to verify your copy I believe. After that I think you can play offline.

Upon re-boot, I get a window about Steam starting up. One of the choices is "play in off-line mode" or something similar. Just select that and you don't need to be on-line for the single player mission.

So no, you don't need to be online to play. The only time my gaming rig was online was after I initially installed the game. Since then it been offline the whole time.

anyway... yes you have to be online, at least for the first time, when steam updates, after that you're a free rider...
