They send encrypted files to your machine. When the game comes out, you can choose to buy it and play it then or if you have a freebie voucher, just play it.

They should do this via bittorrent. That's how World of Warcraft patches are going to be done apparently, makes sense. Not that I'm going to bother; I'd be surprised if HL2 is released in my lifetime.

Apparently they hired Bram Cohen (bit torrent creator) to work on steam a while back.

When does it come out?

Well, the preload is done. Now "You have a locked copy of Half-Life 2 on your computer"

:frown:

Comon Valve, unlock it 😀 :| 😀

At this present time the content servers are struggling a little but remember, there's no rush! Take it easy. Additionally, the cache we're downloading at the moment is called "base source shared materials.gcf" and it weighs in at a whopping 1.01GB.

SO what is the point exactly?

Whenever Gabe feels like "releasing" it, I guess I get to play.

I give it 72 hours before the content is cracked and the artwork is posted all over the internet

So the second its released you can play. And cause as we get closer to the launch more and more people will want to get it.

On a seide note, i think i read somehere what steam/valve has enough bandwidth to give HL2 to one person every second.

The point is so you buy it from Steam rather than going to the store. Valve makes twice as much per copy this way.

So, people like me who have HL2 "keys" from ATI: what's in it for us?

Go to the main steam window, hit "browse games" and the at the bottom of the screen there should be "Register a product I already own" and put in your HL2 CD-Key that came with your ATI card. You'll get access to CS:Source. The Preload should be available to everyone I think.
