Half Life 2 on Ti4200

Hi I need to ask, before i buy/preorder HL2, do you guys think I would be able to run the game on my system?

XP2600+ (not OC)
512 2700 generic
asus a7v8x-x
gainward ti4200 golden sample 64 megs

I am well aware that i would be running the game in DX8 mode with probably low graphics on say 800x600. Do you think i could do this at a minimum 30fps? The game designers have said they have made it to work with older systems so Im' hoping it works.. I really do not have money for an upgrade right now so please dont reccommend for me to just buy a video card. I might be able to scrap some for an extra 512 or 256 ram if that helps.

Thanks!

I played it fine with a X300SE the other day. It still looked OK. I ran it at 800x600 but 1024x768 wasn't to bad either. I think a TI4200 should still be able to play it just fine with its auto settings.

I played CS Source on my Geforce 4 mx420, and it sucks a lot, even if at 800x600. I understand performance difference is pretty significant between the two, just letting you know my situation.

Alrite thanks guys. I was pretty sure i could play but by the looks of it, i have a good chance of actually playing it at decent settings and not the lowest crappy settings. While wer here, Im not sure if i should start another thread but il ask anyhow. I am also planning on getting World of Warcaft (The same day!). How do you think that would stack up on my system? From what i understand, Most mmorpgs require alot of ram, so maby i should invest in another 512? Does anyone also know if WoW is a DX9 game or if its DX8. It does use mostly the same graphics from W3 which is DX8 but i wasnt sure...

Thanks !

alll new games will say they require DX9 to run.....but this is only the runtimes needed to start the game (even if the whole game is coded in dx8)

so all u need do is have the latest dx installed

i would plug for another stick of ram before a new gfx card mate

oh yeah, it'll run OK for sure

btw mik3y, wtf! whos desk is ever that clean? hell no!

LOL, no kidding, that's kind of freaky.

Anyway, I can run Doom 3 ok with my ti4200, so HL2 should at least be playable.

It'l run just fine on your system, and by the way Warcraft 3 is DX7 not 8, but I don't know about WoW, it looks the same though. If I was gonna buy an MMO, I would go for EQII, it looks astonishing!

There's no way i will be able to run EQ2 on my system. On top of that, i actually have a life id like to live...

It runs just peachy on my p4 2.0 ghz with a gf mx 440 so you shouldn't have a problem.

Of course it looks great with my 9800 pro too.

Ive seen people play CSS on 4400s and 4600s, and its not bad at all. They get acceptable frame rates and the game is still extremely playable and fun.

I am considering getting a stick of 512 ram. This will be my final upgrade for this computer as i am trying to save for a brand new system in a years time. Do you guys think there is any point to this? Apparently titles like doom3 love extra mem, and im thinking hl2 would probably benefit a bit. WoW i am sure will benefit alot, since Mmorpgs have massive enviorments that need alot of ram.

hey jimmy, my computer is extremely similar to yours...

xp 2600
1gb ram
a7n8x deluxe
ti 4200

i can play cs source just fine on 800x600 medium quality, 1024x768 has some noticeable slowdowns

as for your extra 512mb question, i just went from 512-1gb a few days ago and the performance isn't very noticeable in doom 3, probably because it's limited by the ti 4200 anyway, so you'd probably be better off saving that money for a better card... i'm going to wait for a 6600gt agp =)

Perfect, thats exactly what I needed to know. That would be my guess as to what would bottleneck the system the most, I was basically just looking for an inexpensive way to add some performace... but I guess thats not the way to go. Thanks, now I will splurge for a new set of speakers instead!! oooh yea

Well, if you have a life to live then you shouldn't consider any MMO at all! 😛 WoW is as addictive as EQII.
Anyway, extra 512mb won't improve your gaming performance except in WoW because of your video card bottleneck, and if you buy a 6600GT (when it comes out) like Scorp that would boost your performance by atleast 100%, your CPU can also reach 3000+ with a decent OC.

my machine 2100+ xp 1 gig of ram. ti 4200 oc to 4600 128mb played doom 3 fine on medium settings on 800x600 so I hope it can handle HL2.

dont have $$ to upgrade yet =_=
