Half Life 2 Not Delayed - Vivendi talking out of ass

Half-life hacker thief speaks?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
According to several Half-life related websites and HL related IRC chatrooms word is the thief who stole the Half-Life 2 source code from Valve is threatening to release the entire source code. Here is his/her statement:

"To all those saying HL2 was delayed because of the hacking action, ill just remind you that what was leaked is what Valve has, nothing more and nothing less, so its pretty good to understand it wasnt finished yet.
Also I'd like to point out the E3 [demo] was one big fake by Valve. Ever tried to kill that soldier in physicstown ? Notice the door will still get kicked ? No scripted sequences ?

To everyone saying this is no Beta: I'd like to point out that THIS is what you wanted Valve to release on 9/30/03, theres no such thing as a much better release in Valves network! "

To Valve: I suggest you stop lying to your customers about how much was stolen/compromised, or I'll have to release everything just to prove my point. And you know what you got, as I do."

Having worked for a while in an IT corporate environment where the company stocks meant everything, I've have a suspicious eye about things like this. It would not really help Valve to lie about a leak in the source code. In fact, it would (and it HAS) hurt the company stock much more so than anything else that can be stolen from them. If a company really needed to the extra development time, they would have come up with a much better excuse. God know 3D Realms has been dealing with this issue with their Duke Nukem (taking) Forever project.

I'm not surprised that a "retractive" story like this would surface just as the stocks are starting to drop and they DID the day leak was announced. Not that any other excuse wouldn't effect the stocks, it's just that source code is extremely precious to any software company. Once it's out, it could literally destroy the company if a competitor got a hold of it. Wallstreet traders take note of this type of info VERY seriously, whether it's validated or not. I don't think Valve would be this stupid and now they're trying to cover up the damage.

Well, I'm even more confused now. If Half Life 2 isn't even 1/3rd done, then I doubt it will even make an April release. This is starting to sound like Team Fortress 2, wait a minute, it is team fortress 2. Bah.

Uh it wouldnt destory game companies. Their product will still go to retail, and if its good or hyped it will sell 1million+, HL2 will still probably sell 2-3million overtime 4-5million like HL. And they will still be able to license the engine, though not as much as they would have. Valve will probably lose out on $15-30million, but its $15-30million they could have made, not $15-30million they already have.

With engine licensing and retail sales, Vavle is still setting pretty, just not as pretty as they would have liked, which is why if they catch whoever did this, hes going to be behind bars for many many years.

I can't say much, but a friend of a friend is close to Valve. I can't release any names. Message was passed along to me that the hacker is "1/2 right, 1/2 wrong" about his accusations. Which parts are right, which parts are wrong, only Valve knows. I'm thinking the part of the game not being able to be done on time is right.

If anyone gets a hold of a copy of the leaked prerelease (doing so is illegal and I don't suggest doing so. A little bird told me this), you'll notice after finishing a map, it says "Source Engine 2 (build -4 days until 9/30/03)".

Mighty interesting...

Since when does a common theif get off making threats like that? Just lock the a$$hole up and throw away the key.

ChefJoe - That particular "hacker" quote is bunk, unfortunately.

how do you know the hacker's accusations are wrong? people who have the demo are claiming that parts of it give evidence that HL2 was no where near a final build in september. in fact some say the enemy AI that's been demonstrated was all scripted and not actual AI code. from the way valve/gabe has been stringing fans along to build hype and waiting a week before to announce a delay makes them lose some credibility.

where's the benchmark even? remember that? why would there be reason to delay it?

also the hacker seems to have tons of stuff from valve. not just source and the alpha, but also stuff from team fortress 2, condition zero, which has been released by him, giving him more credibility.

my question is, if the claims are true and HL2 was never as complete as claimed by valve, how justified were they in bashing nvidia for all this time?

I never said the content was bunk - that particular quote is just not the hacker talking.

Yes, a lot of the AI (I don't know if its all of it yet) is scripted. Not coded. It's interesting you brought up the benchmark. The source leak shouldn't have hindered the release of the benchmark, unless of course, it wasn't done.

Another good point you bring up is Valve's bashing on nVidia. If all thats said is true, and Gabe Newell spent "5x more time" coding specifically for nVidia, how much time was it actually? 10 months vs 2 month

I, in no way, condone the actions of the hacker who did this. Even if he did so "to reveal the truth". In any case, we should not only be pointing our fingers at the hacker, but also at Valve.

This is turning into quite a story, and expect one or both sides of the fight to bring out more evidence. If anything, all of this put some pressure on Valve and they're busy programming like mad code monkeys to save face and release the game on time. Hopefully they won't rush it too much and release a horrible game.

Well, I don't know how much more there was to be done with Half Life 2 however there is no reason why the source code leak should have caused the game to be delayed until April. No way. One month is normal. I really think it that Half Life 2 was far from being completed.

Are you kidding?!?

Im astonished it hasnt been put off further than april. 1 month to completely re-write and re-structure critical code ? I dont think so Tim. They need to change the code they have been writting for the past 2 + years quite significantly so that when the game goes retail there wont be aim bots and wall hacks and all sorts of crap being used on its first day of release. If they left the code the same people could make some very nasty cheats and ruin what could be a great game.
