Half-Life 2 low brightness

I have set the only setting I can find for brightness in the game to maximum. Still, it is too dark.

I know that I can increase the brightness on my monitor.
But, the monitor is calibrated. Nothing else is too dark. Other games are fine.
I don't want to have to increase the monitor brightness every time I play Half-Life 2 and set it back when I am finished with the game.

I have BFG 6800 and use 77.77 drivers from NVIDEA on XP pro.

How can I fix this?

have you tried increasing the gamma bar in the video settings?

I have moved that to the farthest left to get the maximum brightness. Still too dark!
I don't know why it gets brighter as I decrease it though (move left)!
