hey all,

do any of you get extremely long load up times for half life 2? i'm talking about every step.

1. the screen where it says loading in the bottom right (blurred out background)

2. when you try to load a saved game

i'm running a dell 4600, 2.66 ghz, 1 gig RAM, 2 HD's (both WD 7200RPMs), audigy2, 2 opticals...

I wouldn't say "extremely" long, but definitely longer than some other FPS games.

HL2 sucks in this area, takes forever to load and it's annoying, even during gameplay.

i like HL2, but sadly i don't recall a single game i've ever played taking so long to load for me... fear demo loads 10x faster ><

Just timed it (yeah, I'm bored) and loading a save game takes ~40 seconds and the load times in between level sections take about 9 second.

thanks for the replies all. i'm glad i'm not the only one here....thought it was my comp.

would a 10,000RPM HD lessen the problem? if so, by how much?

Loading steam->HL2->saved game is extremely long. I suspect the folks claiming quick load times are running steam in the BG, then all you need is HL2->saved game.

BTW, i have 1GB, 3500+, and a 6800GT OC, 1MB up/down--hardly a low end system for HL2.

homer,

what do you mean running steam in the BG? and what do you mean by 1MB up/down?

does running steam in offline mode speed things up?

Solution

1) Create shortcut oh HL2 on desktop (Load steam > Right click HL2 > "Create Desktop Shortcut")
2) Once shortcut to HL2 has been made, right click on it.
3) Go to Properties.
4) Target feild should read D:\Apps\Steam\Steam.exe -applaunch 220 -game "hl2" -developer

Note: Pay attention to the drive letter of my shortcut, yours might be different.

that helped...thanks alot...what does modifying the target field do exactly?

By adding "-developer", you're running it in development/cheat mode. All this means is, you have access to the console now.
