Half Life 2 impossible to play in offline mode!!!

My DSL modem bit the dust a couple of weeks ago and now I'm at a cafe typing this on my laptop....

When starting Steam, the window just says "Updating Steam..." and stops there! I can't play this game offline!! I saved all the info on my computer like the little card in the box said to do...but still no dice!

By the way, does anybody else think that Vivendi is a cheap bastard for not giving a jewel case or instruction booklet yet still have the balls to charge $55 for this game???:disgust::|

Hold on Hold on....you can, just do this if possible

- Log into your steam account on a system connected to the internet.
- Make sure "remember password" is checked.
- Go into offline mode.
- Close Steam, but do not log out.
- Unplug the network cable.
- LOg back into Steam. It will probably pop up with something like, oops, I cannot connect to the internet, do you want to play in offline mode or reconnect? Hit Offline.
- If an error comes back and says, oops...I still cannot connect, just plug the network cable back in, hit rety, let it authenticate, and then it will let you play offline.
- PROFIT!!

I know its a apin in the ass, and I agree with you.....but there is a way to fix your problem. Did you even bother looking into this before getting upset?

Warcrow: Yes I did look into this by googling a bunch of forums. Plus the solution you suggested is the exact one posted on the Steam official website. However, how am I supposed to connect to the internet when I have NO internet at home? IMO that solution is absolutely retarded (no offense to you, all the flame at Steam).

At any rate, I'm still pretty darned upset. Since when did a single player computer game REQUIRE an internet connection to play?

i know eXactly what you mean . . . . it happened to me after a supposed stutter-fix "update" . . . . fortunately for me, i finished the game.
🙂

i guess another "update" will solve your problem . . . .

sorry . . . i hate Steam too
(many dial-up users feel this way, from what i gather)

Yeah it sucks that you don't have the 'net at home, but your posts did require the internet, so why not let it login to Steam wherever you are posting from?

oddly enough, I can't connect to steam in offline mode. I HAVE to be online, and if it doesn't detect a net connection it just says retry without an option to go offline~

Laptop at internet cafe versus gaming desktop at home with HL2 installed.

Do you set it to remember your password?

Well i'll be . . . .

surprised . . . .

just for kicks, i just went to Steam and connected . . . . after a few seconds a welcome and an apparant mini d/l, i can now startup HL2 w.o. a 'net connection . . . .

i won't be connecting to Steam again (at least until i am ready to replay a fully patched HL2) . . . . 😉

s . . . s . . . . S . . St . . Stt . . . sttutttt . . . . stutteeeer . . .. STUTTERS. 😛

i am glad i paid less than $40 for it. 😛

to the OP, get back on the net (somehow) and keep tryin'

g'Luck!

Well I'm not really :|, just a little :disgust: since Far Cry at least had a PDF manual on disc. Steam suxx but at least there's a workaround. What irks me the most right now is the absence of CS:S bots, despite having officially done them in CS:CZ.

I think someone call the waaahmbulance.
Look at the minimum requirements for HL2 and stop complaining.

1.2 GHz Processor; 256MB RAM; DirectX 7 level graphics card;
Windows 2000/XP/ME/98; 5.5 GB of available Hard Drive Space; DVD-ROM Drive;
Mouse and Keyboard; Internet connection required

Yeah so while you're at the cafe, login and set it to offline mode, then go home and play HL2. Profit?

How would his computer at home know that he has accessed steam at the cafe if it does not have internet access? the Steam carrier pigeons?

I was wondering the same thing.

Just because a few users have issues with it, doesnt mean you should buy it. It's game of the year material. If you dont play it, you're missing out. The min requirements clearly state that you need an Internet connection. If someone cant read that, then it's obviously a PICNIC/PBKAC problem.

Internet connection is fine but let's assume me and my friend buys a copy each and what to play at the same time on the same internet connection (we share a house and cable internet), can we still play?

As long as you both purchase a copy, yes.
