HL2 should be very easy to pirate for off line play of course. The theory is that they'll have to register a copy first and then repack the unlocked files.

why would you ever think it would not be cracked ? this sort of thing is inevitable. give valve credit it wasnt out before release in stores as almost every other game is.

The only thing they seemed to have accomplished is making it harder for the legit users. Most protections usually have adverse effects on the legit population.

Yea, well I'm already anxiously awaiting (mind you I am not asking for one here) a no-cd crack so my son can enjoy the same cd-free experience via his $80 CE retail version that I am enjoying with my $50 bronze steam version...

(BTW, guess who gets the adult XL HL2 tee shirt that came in Collector's Edition)😉

I must say that I disagree here, but only from my experience.

This was the easiest install I have ever done on a game. I have had steam installed since it was Beta. All I had to do was put in my cd-key from the ATI card, and steam did the rest. Since I put in my cd-key awhile ago it feels like I didn't even have to do that 😛. Had HL2 preloaded, and at 12:10 pst I was playing HL2.

How can that be harder for legit users?

Considering how much money they made on the last game, they're well off financially to make quality games even with the cracks out there. Single Player crack is inevitable just like no audio cd protection can withstand ripping.

HL1 sold 8 million copies X 49.99 = 399.92 million !!

That idea is nothing new! Way back in grade school people used to complain about the same thing - one guy would spoil it for the rest of the class. Now old Osama Bin Laden went and "did it again" a few years ago - now train fans get hassled all the time for taking pictures of passing trains. Yeah, it sucks!

I'll be the actual gross profits were much lower since many of those copies sold for allot less than MSRP. I have bought most of my games at discount prices since I just can't see paying full MSRP. Sacred was one of those games that seemed to hardly ever go on sale for anything more than $5 off of the $39.95 price, so I went to Ebay for that one and won a copy for $21 plus shipping.

The devs also only get $7 per sale (according to Gabe), so it's less than the full $50.
But add in the expansions and it goes up again.

I am definitely buying this game.... When I can get it for about $20.00 that is. I can wait.

I bought the CE edition $79 bucks with Tshirt ect. I am really pleased how the game performs with my old geforce ti4600. Its very playable and im loving the game, kudos to Valve and I am willing to give them 80 bucks for their effort!

looks like the authentication tactic wasn't good enough ...
On the contrary - it wasn't pirated before zero-hour. It worked perfectly.😛

I've said all along Steam activation isn't to stop piracy. Crackers will obviously easily defeat it like they have every other game. Steam activation is to stop you from reselling the game after you've had your 12 hours of fun.

Thoreticly, how does it stop one from reselling the game on ebay or whatever? The seller can include the created account info and such with the software or something i would imagine?

Damn, where can I get this version. I start to get motion sickness after playing for 30 minutes when I play the real thing.
