Okay...just got HL2. My question is this...why do I have to connect to Steam (Whatever THAT is) to play the game? WTH is up with that? It may seem like this is a stupid Q to some of you out there, but I am confused...I've NEVER had to go through so much just to play a PC game...and not even an online game! I just want to play the single player...or is that even an option?!

To combat piracy. But they utterly failed as you can see. Hackers can simply release a stripped version of any authenticated games...

I wonder if we'll ever win this piracy battle.

Be happy you're just getting into steam. Just think of what it was like on the first week, waiting for the updates. Grrr.

What? You don't like Steam? There must be something wrong with you because no way would developers waste their time on something bad if it was going to be used by millions of people across the world. Just reboot the computer and then try again.

Go talk about it here.

I'm sure there are a billion threads just like this one. Perhaps if you took a minute to think about the implications of and reasons behind Steam, it would all make sense to you (regardless of whether or not you like it).

You have to go through Steam. It's a copy protection thing. Funny thing is that the pirates DON'T have to do the Steam thing. Just another example of the normal customer getting reamed by copy protection that doesn't affect pirates at all. It's happened to me, it's happed to you. Learn to live with it, or turn to the dark side.

Doesn't it just make you wonder??? Someone actually got paid to think that shyt up, and was persuasive enough to sell it to a table full of supposedly intelligent people.

steam is teh suck, but neccesary for the first time playing HL 2 unless you want updates. After the first time it can be played in offline mode.

No.

You don't have to connect to play the game. Only to install it.

Its a good system, it has severely hampered piracy. It makes it very easy to play my games on any computer, all I have to do is log into steam and download them. So easy, very convieniant, no real hassels at all.

Steam > you

Wow, a lot more responses than I thought there would be. I finally got through to Steam, and started playing it last night finally. There is an upside to all of this, and that is that I was able to play single WITHOUT the CD in drive! I did not see an option to play SP without going through Steam, but I dealt with it!
