After about 5 - 30 min of playing the game freezes and the sound loops, I can't exit to desktop but After pressing ctrl+alt+del a few times the sound stops and I get a mouse over the frozen image but I can't get back to the desktop forcing me to restart.

I've tried reinstalling and it didn't work. Another thing that is weird is the fact that Counter Strike: Source works completely fine, no freezing whatsoever. Also the game freezes in Lost Coast aswell.

Btw I have the latest drivers (5.10) and a 9600 XT.

I dont have HL2 installed anymore but when I did I had similar problems as you. I would sometimes get a memory error popping up when the game froze. This may not apply to you because you dont get the memory error message. I have an Athlon64 nf3 and X800XT with 2 sticks 512. I get the error when my system is oced and when I set everything on default. You firstly need to make sure your system is stable, prime95 and memmtest. Next step is to search and read through the support section on the steampowered website and follow their guide < gives you reasons and solutions to this problem. If you search through google you will find heaps of info. Other fixes I have tried included changing agp aperture size, disabling fastwrites, changing the size of virtual memory, going from 1T to 2T for the memory, also loosening other mem timings, and theres also one that involves copying and pasting some HL2 files to another directory(sorry cant explain to well cos i cant remember how it goes).

I used to have the same problem, I think it was overheating... never found out what the problem was.
