I may be mystaken, but, the graphics department of this game hasn't received a lot of attention. IF you think I'm wrong point me to the right screenshots site

HL didn't wow anyone with graphics, it was the gameplay. Last year, before Far Cry and Doom III, HL2 looked amazing, now it's subpar. But from the movies, the environment is still amazing, hopefully the gameplay won't disappoint.

Admittitly, in a post-Doom 3 release world, alot of games are going to look a little "dated" thats not suing the D3 engine. But, I whole-heartedly disagree with you. I think HL2 is one of the games that will not fall into that catagory. It simple looks phenominal! There were two HL2 movies released today in Bink format. I beleive the running resolution of the game is 128x1024 in the movies. They're a heafty download, but very worth it.

Link to the 2 new HL2 movies

Let us know what you think.

The HL2 screenshots and movies all look pretty sweet to me. CS Source on the other hand looks like CS on the quake3 engine, maybe slightly better. Maybe someone who has played CSS can comment but all the screenshots I've seen don't look a whole lot better then the original, as I remember it anyway...

Certainly everyone is entitled to his opinion, but I don't seem to grasp the meaning of all these doubtful comments.
I watched 4-5 HL2 movies and I was astonished by the GFX let alone the gameplay(what we can understand from a movie).
I mean name me a better looking game... Even Far Cry imho isn't so good.As for D3 the game might have amazing lightning and shadow engine but that isn't enough to compare with the profound king of all... :D
OMG!!! I CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN'T WAIT!!!!! pwn them all!!! Cmon KING!!

P.S: I apologize for my spontaneous immature childish prehistoric insticts of mine.... But to me this game is a legend

didnt download the first one but the second didnt impress me any. Neither did Doom III graphics wise. I personally think Far Cry coming out kinda made DIII and HLII not look so hot anymore. I think Far Cry looks just as good as either.

It was the gameplay in Half-Life that kept me playing, not the graphics. These days, if the graphics aren't better than all the other games out there, nobody even bothers to play it.

are all those in-game?

Yeah, they are.

FWIW, HL2's graphics are definitely, er. different from D3's. They are clearly less detailed in general, and less realistic-looking IMO (particularly in the area of lighting and shadows), but the HL2 engine is able to render huge outdoor areas, something we haven't see from D3. On some level in playing D3, I got the sense they made the outdoor areas toxic to distract you from the lack of detail, color and level architecture (though what you did see looked great).

HL2 definitely looks like a more interesting game IMO, but we shall see. I actually really liked D3, even if it was basically a prettier, less interesting ripoff of HL1.

I agree.
I have to say, apart from the exceptional lightning(or maybe, lack of mostly), Doom3's artwork is absolutely kickass as well.

Of course we'll see once it comes out, many games turn out completely different than their screenshots would have you believe.
And I must say, I don't quite trust Valve in the technical department, while I loved Half Life and probably played it through ~30 times, it's one of the buggiest games I've ever played.

HL2 looks so much better, one would be blind to say 'HL2 doesn't look much improved' from the original one. D3 looks good but I got sick of being trapped in same looking place 95% of the game play.
Now, I see that HL2 doesn't seem to have that kind of problem. When I first Doom3, it made me wanna 'play' it so bad. When I see HL2, it makes me wanna 'BE' there and that's a huge difference.

It is funny how everyone bitched that Doom3's graphics didn't end up being revolutionary. But now they will sit back and watch as other titles get released that all of a sudden look dated in comparison. And they should.

Don't get me wrong, I am SO looking forward to HL2. I just never expected it to beat Doom3s graphics to begin with. I can't wait to use that gun that throws objects though, goddamn that looks like fun.

HL2, if they pull through with what they have promised, will have amazing AI, amazing gameplay and an awesome deformable environment. If it has those 3 things, I will be very happy.

Edit: Warcrow, that screenshot compares a special E3 2004 demo screen of HL2 where you could only see that head vs random shots of Doom3. The Doom3 heads look more flesh-like and have far more realistic ears, hair and lips. The HL2 shot has amazing eyes and an awesome job skinning the face details. The other thing you will notice is that after you get past the head, the HL2 models lose a lot of their detail. Where as a lot of the Doom3 models increase in details past the head, many of the models not having shirts and having insanely detailed chests / muscles / etc.

You could draw the same comparison between Doom3 HL2 as you could Quake2 and HL. Quake2 had the new engine that did a lot of new graphical achievements. But HL had amazing skinning and realistic textures for its time. At the time it was released, HL had the most realistic looking characters out of any FPS, but the models were no different than other games.

It doesnt have to be photorealistic to be fun. Stop your complaining and play the damn game when it comes out. :p

Indeed, aside from Doom3 which I'm currently playing, I mostly play old Amiga games, the fun is the gameplay, not the graphics ;)

That said, HL2 looks like it will have some pretty nice graphics, I hope it has the gameplay as well. :p

 I agree, I think the graphics look great from the screenshots and movies I've seen. Of course I wont know for sure till I actually play it. My hopes are similar, most of the fun I had with the first game was playing through the single player. I absolutely loved it and have yet to find any game to match it, on any platform.

Deus Ex 1 had match-able gameplay. So did System Shock 2. If you were going to start a list of insanely good FPS single player experiences, I would deffinitely include those 2 :).

Honestly, I never had a good enough computer to run Deus Ex 1 when it came out... so I never got into it because it ran quite choppy. But System Shock 2 was definately a good time :)

Deus Ex had good ideas too bad that IMHO it was subpar gameplay wise. Sure you could select different skills. Computers vs Lockpick... but you could get to pretty much every place no matter what skills you had chosen. Although if you had lockpick in one spot you might get a stash... if you have good computers in another youll get one anyways. It didnt make a difference which skills you specialized in.

Interesting... I think doom 3 looks good but it's too monotonous. half life 2 on the other had looks almost as good in a huge variety of environments. this is basically the same reason why i never thought quake1/2/3 looked that good... too much brown. i feel like anyone can make their game look good with a limited color palette and limited variety of environments.

no one's going to look closely at a particular model when it's trying to kill them at insane speeds... but they probably will notice the environments. if it's not 99.9% black ala the animated spawn, it will be better.
