You're in luck. Had this happended a while ago, you would have to get a new disk..

Anyways, a little while ago, Valve released a patch over Steam, to get rid of the Retail Authentification. So, if you have broadband, you can preload Half-Life 2, then just enter your cd-key, let it athenticate (for the first and last time) and then play.

Hope this helps.

Download steam and create a user name. Then click on Half Life 2 and download it. At some point in time you'll have to enter your CD key.

right click on the steam tray icon and go to "Browse Games" at the bottem of the screen that pops up it should say "Register a product I already own..." click on that and enter your CD key in. Then you should be able to download it.

I get this pop up that said- Installation of half life 2 Retail Standard is required before continuing.

Please insert your Half Life 2 Retail Standard CD/DVD into the drive and select "Install" from the autorun menu.

So I do that and half way threw the set up the disc stop and the install has stop.

don't try to install the game off of the CDs. Download the game through Steam and then when it asks you to enter disc one, put it in your drive. If you validate your CD key (from the retail box), you can then play the game.

If something pops up after insterting your CD don't choose to install Half Life 2. You should be able to download it and install it over the Internet from Steam. If you're still stuck, try calling Valve over the phone to get it sorted out. good luck.
