Anyone know what the specs of the machine that demo'd Half-Life 2 at E3 were (besides the Radeon 9800)?

probably pretty powerful machine, i know the system that ran doom 3 was a p4 2.53ghz with 1GB PC1066 RDRAM, and a radeon 9700 pro.

Confident It was running a R9800 256mb Pro. I remember ATi "bragging" about HL2 being displayed in the ATi booth. Running the "fastest VPU", or whatever they like to call it.

It is also supposed to be able to work with mid level machines. I would like to see how good it would run though.

There is a preview article up on Gamespot and they said they saw the demo played on a 2 gig p4 with a Geforce ti4600 and they said it ran great.

all these game companies are not stupid. they will not release a game that requires R9700 or better to run because they'll lose massive amounts of money. my bro wanted a system to run doom3 and HL2. he ended up getting a 9600pro (to oc of course) and my old 1.6A clocked at 2.4. that will be MORE than sufficent to run it beautifully

true....I bet Doom 3 will be playable all the way to the Geforce2s provide you lose some quality. The only people who will do complete renovations will be those who have some fetish with playing games at max details no matter wat. But what I personally think is that Doom3's "max/ultimate" details will slow down even the latest pc and we'll have to wait a while (no more than 6ish months) before we have hardware fast enough. That is my guess atleast

Edit:

Why would Halflife 2 require a 256 meg 9800 Pro? I hope they aren't shooting for too high requirements because I know of a lot of people who played the first halflife because their 300mhz pc was able to play it smoothly when compared with other games similar to it

HL2 won't be requiring a 9800. I was just stating what card it was running on @ E3. ATi wanted to show off the 9800. Valve wanted to show off HL2. HL2 was at ATi's booth.

I would expect HL2 to run on a Geforce3 level card. I don't think Doom3 would play well on a GF2, I would probally want a minimum GF3.

Valve's game oughta be able to run on a GF2, if they're smart. Us folks at our enthusiast board here sometimes forget that the general mass doesn't have a GF3 or 4 or Radeon 9800. The general population has prebuilts, many of which come with integrated graphics (shudder) or things like GF4 MX's. I believe a GF2 Pro or something would be a good drop off point for a known graphically intensive game like Doom 3 or HL2.

Yeah...nothing like building graphically-intensive games for a low common denominator. It's fine if the game can run on a GF2, but if Valve is bragging about how gorgeous their engine looks, then it better use something a little bit more impressive than just hardware transform and lighting... "Enter the Matrix" is a good example of a game with HUGE graphical potential that was dumbed down for PS2-level graphics, dragging the Xbox and PC versions down with it. Games like Half-Life 2, Doom III, and Unreal Warfare are meant to push the limits of real-time graphics...if someone with integrated graphics wants to play a Half-Life game, there's always the original. ;)

Yes it's a 9800 Pro. In the tech demos, at the place where they show effects on rotating rectangles, he states they are using it.

Seriously, about HL2, that game is going to be awesome. Sure Doom III has more detailed graphics but I'm sure the gameplay and story won't come close to HL2. I rewatched the videos from E3 and I'm stunned... I love the part where the 3-legged giant alien spider rips through some dude's stomach and then lifts his leg to let the guy slip down. Sooooo cool!

Half-Life played pretty good on a Voodoo1 or better. And it didn't look bad either!

I played with a Banshee and TNT1. Very nice TNT. :)

Of course, those new HL2 models (the pictures were awesome!) will need a bit more oomph, but I'm sure with lower-detail settings, a GF2MX or better would suffice at low-res. How long 'til it's released?

I first played Half-Life on a P200 and a 4 meg Diamond Stealth 2 S220 Rendition Verite 2100. Rendition used a miniGL like 3DFX did. It played very well and looked great. I later "upgraded" to a Voodoo2. It was faster, but didn't have the great image quality that the Rendition card had. I should be in good shape with a P4 @ 3 GHz and a 9700P for HL2.

Sept 30 is the date last I heard.

They ran it on one of DELL's new gaming machines so that means @ least a 2.8ghz(800mhzFSB) P4(more likely the 3ghz version) and 512MB(more likely 1GB) of PC3200 ram. And since it was in the ATI booth it was using their current top of the line card which is the 256MB ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. So thats quite a system. ;)
