Does it have ladder?

Does it keep track of your stats?

Can you add friends?

Is it the best free shooter out there?

Thank you to all who answer my questions...

It's Steam so of course you can add friends.

There's no in-game ladder or stat tracker but you can probably find a server that has all that stuff and just play there.

A server? I thought steam was the server, and then you just picked a game... I'm confused, do explain! :)

No, steam is a content accessing medium. You can download the games through it, and access games through it. It does not actually host the game server. That is being done by some other company and when you select a game to join, you are connecting to the server.

Day of Defeat, and Counter-strike are much better games. Generally free on steam depending on what you have bought.

Day of defeat and Counter strike are not free on steam... sucks, cause counter strike looked pretty good.

Quake Live is the best free shooter out there. It's better than a lot of not free shooters too. It has ladders, stats, achievements, friends, clans, and lots of competition.

Disagree! I hate to say it, but I absolutely hated Quake live. Everyone moves way to fast and it is like impossible for me to get a kill.

The system where it hooks you up with people your skill level did not work at all for me. I guess people cheat it?

No but there's just very few people playing it that aren't already really good.

Enemy Territory is an excellent free shooter. Counterstrike 1 is not free but is only like $10 these days.

they looked pretty dated.. :\

It's all about the game play....

As long as you can tell what it is your suppose to be looking at.......Then the graphics should be fine.

Don't knock it till you at least try em. You know don't judge a book by it's cover. ;)

You were looking for some free shooters with stats right? So give em a whirl. Try Tribes 1 (playtribes.com) & 2 (tribesnext.com). Why not? There free.

Here's a bigger list of free FPS games too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_First-Person_Shooters

While Tribes 1 and Tribes 2 are old, they were some of the best multiplayer games ever.

Of that list on Wiki of free shooters, best ones also include:

Combat Arms
War Rock
America's Army
Fear Combat
Savage
Savage 2
Enemy Territory
Urban Terror

War Rock is kind of generic but I guess you could have some fun. Same with Combat Arms except CA has premium content they want you to pay for (like better weapons). None of them are necessarily awesome, but for some fun here and there they are okay plus that's quite a good list for absolutely free games. HL2 DM is just as good or better than most of them though.,

Also, Battlefield Heroes is still in beta, so you could play that.

You just need to get better.
You get better by practicing.
If you have played quake2 or quake 3 and had developed some skills such as strafe jumping you would enjoy the game better.

Also the main problem with Quake live is that the lower your ping the faster it seems you move and fire. If you are like me and you ping over 60 and when i play on servers on the east coast I ping over 100 easily you need to play quaite a bit to adapt to the differences caused by variaous pings.

Good Luck!!
