Half-Life 2 crash to desktop

I seem to have a little problem. With the construction of a new computer, Half Life 2 has begun crashing to desktop. I was almost done with the game on my old Intel box, but have since rebuilt my computer. Unfortunately, the save games were lost so I have to start over. But I can't get very far. Out of nowhere, it will crash to desktop. No warning, no error message. Memory and HD are the same, the video, OS and CPU are new.

System:

AMD Athlon 64 4000+
1GB Mushkin PC3200 memory
SATA 120 GB drive.
ATI X800 XL video
Windows Professional SP1.

Old system was an Intel P4 3GHz with Win XP Home and a 9800 Pro.
