hajj stampede

That is just crazy. It's reason #2,451,695 why I prefer to be non-religious. The sheer fanatacism of some of the followers just baffles me to no end. I do wish they'd find a way around this problem. Maybe they need assigned stoning days, where if your name begins with A-D, you can stone the devil effigy on Tuesday; E-H can stone it on Thursday; etc... etc..

I wouldn't just blame it on religion, stampedes happen at non-religious events as well. I have heard of people being trampled at rock concerts, sporting events, and even black friday sales events.

I do think the common sense would tell self-preservation people to stay away from this event with its yearly track record though.

I agree. Large numbers of people in a confined space with some sort of catalyst (ie. panic) can play a large roll as well. If you screamed fire in a crowded subway station, people would get trampled. Extreme fanaticism does seem to pack in the people more reqularly, though.

Maybe I'm just cold-hearted, but I couldn't help but laugh out loud at this one.

The fact that the column representing the devil was replaced with an oval wall with extra padding on the edges. I can hear the engineers after they built it, "That should do it. At the least ones up front might survive another trampling!" And I just cracked up with the report that many brought luggage. Probably full of rocks!

This Just another reason to confirm my beliefs that all muslim's (well ok, maybe not all) are raving loonies and that their brain is the size of an M&M.
 
Can someone point to a link as to what exactly happens at these rituals? The best I could find is that they throw 7 stones and chant a couple of different things. But do they throw stones at each other? Who throws at who? Sorry, I'm just a little confused with this ritual.

I can understand stampede deaths when there's a fire or something else to run away from but in this situation I agree. There was no reason for anyone to die, yet it seems to happen every year.
